This place has a lot of good reviews. I decided to swing inside to order so I could get a feel for what others were ordering and see their operation. First thought was the inside decor / vibe was very cool although I along with others walked out drenched in sweat debating on going home or just sitting in my car with my ac on blasting cold air in my face the challenge isn’t for the faint heart my hand could barely fit around the crust wich was 75% of the pizza I decided to take a bite out of the sheer massive mountain of crust leaving my mouth thinking I had just sat underneath the hand dryer at Casey’s with my mouth open for 30 minutes what made this even worse was the only way to get drinks was behind the counter I had to go to the counter 7 times to refill my water before I could go inside to tackle the task of a second slice. My sisters boyfriend had suggested the 40 minute drive for this atrocious pizza I would have rather spent the 2 hours wasted watching my children at home sleep. I have questioned lots of my previous experiences with this man I had seen him two other times doing questionable activities that I thought were jokes I no longer know if I can trust him around my kids he ate wood chips at are local park silly me thinking it was a joke laughed although I now know his taste buds are wired in a way that could not be duplicated again. I also feel bad for when I punished my kids when I had seen a box of crayons all with bite marks in them they denied being the ones to eat them I had no idea it could have been a 40 year old adult I was playing cards with. I decided to punish him with farts on the way back that resembled the bottle of honey I grabbed and drank after my first bite to save my life from the choking fiesta from the crust with a small side of pizza. I had high hopes. The two people in front of me ordered New Orleans style crust so I decided to be safe and do the same. I ordered the Prairie Special as it is very close to a similar pizza that I enjoy back home. The pizza came out. Looked fine. But man was the dough super thick. It reminded me a lot of Digiorno pizza but even thicker. But also the crust was super bland. There’s honey at every table for the crust That’s to make the crust tolerable. The toppings were scarce for a $28 medium pizza. Like there were 4 toppings but getting a bite with 2 ingredients together was near impossible. One bite, only bell pepper. One bite only sausage. One bite only onion. Etc. it’ was so bad that this fat boy didn’t even want to take the leftovers to work the next day for lunch. This is a miss and don’t see what the good reviews are all about.
Seriously the best pizza ever. Came down from MN to get with family and of course we have to stop here. Haven’t been in years and the taste is exactly as I remember. It’s gonna make it hard to eat pizza back home because they’ll all be compared to this.
We ordered pizza for delivery from Great plains on a recent visit to Ames and it was very good. My husband is picky about pizza, especially the cheese to sauce ratio and this one had the right ratio for him. I was also please to see that they had whole wheat crust, which is unusual for a pizza place. It was very good.
Uodate March 28th 2022Still great pizza!Picture below is the buffalo.... two thumbs up!!!!Great pizza.
My favorite is the thin Denver (wheat) crust. My kids have love the thick crust and dipping it in the honey. Stop in for a lunch slice of the day. Cinnamon roll sticks a hidden gem.
An Ames institution for as long as I can remember. The pizza is filling, particularly if you get the tradional, thicker crust; some people don't like this crust as much as other kinds. The seating area is interesting, and has multiple levels.
First time was amazing, but they haven’t been able to replicate that experience. Last pizza barely had any sauce and the dough tasted like alcohol or some type of cleaning agent.
Quick, tasty and convenient slices for lunch. Love the crust, dipping extra crust (soft on the inside, crispy on the outside) in honey.
My favorite pizza ever, particularly the thick Denver crust! Some people LOVE the thick Denver wheat crust and some people dislike it with a passion. To me it’s the best pizza I’ve ever had..especially dipping the crust in honey. My wife doesn’t like it so much. The thin crust will be good for anyone. Great atmosphere. Great service. Anytime I’m in Ames I try to hit up Great Plains.
Fantastic crust. Family likes the New Orleans. Im a Sam's Recipe fan. Thank you!
