Got food poisoning after eating here. Service is slow, very slow to get seated. Many people walk out the door. Food has fancy names but just doesn’t taste good. Such a shame, used to be a nice place to eat. Overpriced.
Update: 12 years since the first time I tried it...and still amazing.I've lived in Iowa for the last 7 years and can say that this is easily one of the best restaurants and one of the best bakeries in the state! Their menu is seasonal and changes with what's available. They also use local produce wherever possible. I've had just about everything on the menu and can recommend just about everything. They are also a great breakfast and brunch (on the weekends) spot. You will not be disappointed!!
Our party of three went there this evening.. service and server were excellent.. ambience is great but I was disappointed with the food, sadly. My spouse had the salmon Ruben and loved it…. but I had the cafe burger and our son had the veggie burger. veggie burger was dry..my burger was lukewarm and absent any truffle aioli and the bun was cold and dry ,,. The pickled onions were good and a large slice of tomato and a nice piece of lettuce. The burger was .. just tasteless. The slice of cheese was there but didn’t taste like anything. the house potato chips were overcooked . I will try again but I hope they up their game as $15 for a burger and potato chips in Iowa merits a higher level of taste.
Cafe is a wonderful combination of excellent food, a very comfortable atmosphere and great service. The place makes you feel so welcome, you will want to visit often. We were there for breakfast and enjoyed the original and totally homemade offerings. We will definitely return next time we are in town.
Not too fancy but supremely tasty innovative meals to please all palates - from soup to dessert a real winner in every category with prices that won't bust the budget
Best place to eat in Ames Iowa as of today in my opinion. Menu changes with the seasons but they have some favorites for sure. The deserts are amazing.
The veggie burger is absolutely delicious. I am not a vegetarian but I opt for the veggie burger over any other entree. The side salad with candied walnuts, feta and balsamic is amazing. So good.

I used the waitlist service from the website and we were able to walk right in and be seated. We had 3 adults and 2 kids so they gave us a large table at the back and it was perfect. Wait staff was friendly and helpful, food was delicious. A unique menu blended favorites like mac and cheese and a burger while I had Thai chicken meatballs. We'd definitely go again
