Saganaki was tasty and bread was spot on. The Original Gyro was pretty good too. The gyro meat wasn't greasy which was very nice. The plate was completely full which I appreciated and easing to the eye. Who likes to order food and the plate is hardly full? I loved that they gave lots of tzatziki sauce so I didn't have to ask for more.
just bought some desserts to take home. instead of getting rid of the old desserts they sell them. the Napoleon was like taffy it was so old. let alone left us standing in the beginning and middle of buying to go do 1 9f her other 2 jobs. I'm very dissatisfied that they have dropped the food quality so fast. yuck save your money.
One of the best Greek places we have ever found in the entire Midwest! We highly recommend everything about this place, from the outstanding food to the terrific ambiance and service!
Very friendly staff who provide great service! The meal started out well - their bread is fantastic (baked on the premises), Greek salad was a good portion and fried zucchini with delicious skordalia. Cocktails were tasty too! That said, we don’t recommend dining at Athenian Greek Cuisine in Merrillville. For our main course, we ordered the Greek combination plate, the Greek pork chops and the dolmathes ….food was good yet it lacked seasoning. Everything needed salt and there was zero lemon flavor in the lemon sauce on my dolmathes. Feels like “watered-down” Greek food rather than authentic, bursting with flavor food that we Greeks are known for around the world. Super disappointing that their dessert offerings were nil with the exception of baklava. A Friday-night out usually means the treat of a sweet ending. The worst part was that my husband’s pork chops made him violently ill for several hours after eating them. When we spoke with a few friends who had eaten at the Athenian, without even telling them of our experience, they told us they had the pork chops and EVERY SINGLE ONE had been sick after eating them….so if you chose to go, STAY away FROM the PORK CHOPS. Our guess is that they use some kind of preservative or solution which is what makes people sick. We won’t be returning yet we hope they’ll sort out the pork chop issue. No one wants to be sick after spending $100 on a meal ever ….
Incredible meal sat the Athenian! Large portions and reasonable prices! Started with lemon rice soup, olive and feta plate, and saganaki. Then had the spinach and feta stuffed chicken topped with saganaki for me and grilled octopus appetizer for my boyfriend. We are thrilled to have such quality and authentic greek food near home… no more going to Chicago for greek food! All servers and hosts were very kind and friendly and informed us of “Greek Night” they have on Sunday nights with live bands and a party like atmosphere. So impressed!!!

The host was very friendly and thanked us for coming. We were a party of 9. They were very patient with us as we waited for everyone to get here. I ordered the Athenian stuffed chicken breast with a potato, rice pilaf and spinach. My hubby ordered the Athenian platter so we could try the variety they had to offer on one plate. I HIGHLY recommend this platter and it is big enough for two! The portions are big, as I only ate half of my food. I will definitely be returning . I especially enjoyed the spanakopita and the gyro meat (tender and not greasy) from the platter. We also had the dolmades for an appetizer. It is rice with beef stuffed in grape leaves, topped with a lemon based sauce. It was ok. I added a pic of my friend's chocolate mousse just to show one of the many desserts they have to offer. I was too full. If you have a large party like we did, I would reserve ahead, but they did accommodate us. Seems like it is family ran. The wait service was mediocre, but I'm thinking this person was inexperienced. Still jad a great time!!!
