Great German food, good selections of beer and wine.
Great music and atmosphere. The drink line moves fairly quick, considering the amount of people in the venue!
The Rathskeller, located in the Mass Ave district of downtown Indianapolis, is the city's oldest restaurant still in operation today. This incredible German restaurant first opened its doors in 1894 and has been serving up impressive cuisine ever since. The Rathskeller is part of the Athenaeum and used to be called the Athenaeum Restaurant. This German restaurant was built to mirror a Bavarian inn and dining establishment, as well as a Munich beer hall. This restaurant has won best German restaurant in Indianapolis year after year and continues to top best bar and beer lists — and it's easy to see why!We were greeted with the bread and hot pretzel basket.. absolutely a winner.. but be careful of the spicy mustard.. not for the faint of heart..We started with 2 types of appetizers. The hot wurst Platte was a wonderful selection of bratwurst, bockwurst, kielbasa, and German wieners. The 2 sides of red cabbage and homemade sauerkraut came with a variety of German mustards for dipping. The rathskellar appetizer combo came with chicken cordon Bleu fingers, Cajun chicken poppers, brat n kraft balls and jalapeño corn bread hush puppies. Then we had the grilled yellowfin tuna that was charbroiled and served with a Dijon mayonnaise dipping sauce.N had the schnitzel parmesan topped with a beautiful sauce with melted provolone cheese and parmesan cheese.
6/3/22 update. Once again another great visit. I want to say thank you to our server, Allyssa for her wonderful service. We have had her twice and do hope I did not spell her name incorrectly. Age works the first seating area and table by the fireplace ?Just love this restaurant. My fourth visit was this Saturday and once again, a wonderful experience. The classic setting, the great service staff and of course the menu.I am always tempted to order something new but it’s difficult when they serve The Mixed Wurst Platte. ? The Schnitzel also a favorite as it would be hard pressed to find a better version here in Indy.We stopped in for lunch awhile back and would highly recommend the Frikadelle as well. You will never look at a hamburger the same.If you have never been here, you should definitely put on your to do list. Probably being redundant to all the praise those local to Indy already know of the Rathskeller, but as a transplant here, thought they deserved the high recommendation.
Awesome date night venue, wedding venue or catered events. Live music, atmosphere best in Indy, must see and experience. Food is fantastic. Service is top notch. Be casual and meet up with friends or get fancy for a night out. This place is incredible.
We had a fabulous dinner for a business meeting. I honestly cannot think of anything negative about this place. My favorite dish was the Hot Wurst plate is huge, with a ton of variety. Warning - do not take a large slab of mustard, you will get an instant sinus drain. Ask me how I know. It was painfully pleasurable. Honestly I could have just ordered the Hot Wurst with a couple German beers and be done with it. But nooooo, I cannot go to a German place without partaking in some Schnitzel. We ordered family style, Jaeger Schnitzel and Schnitzel Cordon Bleu. The Jaeger was excellent, brown mushroom gravy on point. I really did not like the Cordon Bleu, just lacking flavor and to dry for my taste. Also, you have to get the hot bacon salad dressing, holy moly this is good stuff……I would have like to try the French Onion, next time. Service was outstanding A++++++. We will be back.
After only ever eating at Hofbrauhaus for German food I have to say eating at The Ratherskeller was a refreshing experience. Really good food and large portions. I had the Rouladen which I've never even seen on any other menu. Super good.
Wonderful food and fantastic service. The schnitzel is amazing and the staff is very friendly. Will definitely come back.
I'm always on the lookout for a German restaurant that my hubby would enjoy, and this place lived up to the expectations for sure! Large menu, huge portions, and a generous bread bowl to start. The staff was attentive and friendly, and the food tasted amazing! Save room for the delicious cake if you can! Couldn't have asked for more ☺️
The staff was kind and courteous, the food was delicious and the beer was awsome.
