Best old school place for a great fried chicken dinner like your grandmother would make

Great food as always

Amazing family style meal. A true Indianapolis treasure.

Dinner was amazing! There was 10 of us celebrating a birthday. Service was great and the food was delicious. We will definitely be back in the future.

Where do I start. First off, walking in felt like you were entering a funeral home. I don’t know why specifically, but that’s the vibe we got. Our service was good. The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. Now to the food. So before I dive in it’s important to note we paid $32 pp for a two piece chicken (white meat) dinner. At that price point, I expect excellence, and unfortunately it wasn’t. The star of the show, the chicken, was great! However the sides were ehhh. They reminded me taste wise of something you’d see on the buffet at Golden Corral. The biscuits initially brought to our table were rock hard, and I’m not exaggerating. Was that because we had a mid-day reservation you ask??? Well that’s possible, but a horrible excuse. All in all the experience was ok and probably a one and done trip for us. If you’re going to charge that for a chicken dinner, everything needs to be excellent.

Our family always loves going here for special occasions like anniversaries and birthdays. We went for my daughter’s birthday last night. The food was good as it always is and our waiter was excellent. Never an empty glass or bowl of food. He was very efficient.

Waiter was fairly attentive once crowed died down. Outside of building was old and not cared for. NO HANDICAPPED ENTRANCE!! Inside was clean but old and not taken care of, noticed where paint was chipped and not fixed at the door to what seemed to be the kitchen. Our table and chairs were not level because the floor was shifting. A glass with condensation would slide away. Assistant waiter brought salad, bread and beets with no dressing for salad. Waiter was not seen again until main course was delivered but did offer to get a fresh salad and bring dressing. Soda glasses were often left empty for long periods of time. Salmon was good but when put on my plate with my additional meat choice everything tasted maple from the runny salmon glaze. Filet was over cooked but after the extensive wait, did not ask for one better cooked. Will not return if back in town.

The food was very bland, you have to get the beets, cottage cheese and biscuits. No substitutes, the actual food has no flavor and the sides tasted like they were fresh out of a can. Again with no flavor aside from the can taste, we added butter that was placed for the bread into the corn, green beans, and mashed potatoes. That alone added life, then we added seasoning. It’s very loud inside also.

My wife and I first went to HollyHock Hill in the 60’s when we were teens! Over the years very little has changed! Excellent fried chicken with all the trimmings served family style! The service is also always fantastic!

My husband found this little gem when searching for Amish style food. One of very few restaurants that have true family style dining, and well known for their delicious fried chicken. All of the entrees come with multiple sides, served family style at the table. Our meals started with mixed salad, which comes with their own house recipe vinaigrette.. Which it appears they also sell bottles of.. the vinaigrette had a nice sweetness to it and was very tasty. The salad was served alongside fluffy warm biscuits and apple butter, cottage cheese, and pickled beets. The beets were so good that we got a refill on those. The entrees were served with sides of corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, and country gravy. My husband got the fried chicken entree, and paid an upcharge for all white meat chicken and an upcharge for a side of sweet & spicy sauce. I got the chicken tenderloin entree, fried (grilled is also an option) which comes with ranch dressing. All of the chicken was huge, perfectly cooked, perfectly fried, and delicious. Neither of us could finish our entree as it was so big and filling. Dinner is wrapped up by an included scoop of vanilla ice cream, accompanied by 3 syrups you can add - chocolate, mint, and butterscotch. They do have additional sides and desserts you can purchase separately - but the all included dinner is way more than enough. Our server was Chris - he's worked there for over 20 years and his experience shows. Service was excellent. He was quick to give refills, clear the table, managed our table and a large party flawlessly, brought to go containers without even asking, and was very patient and kind. Even if the food wasn't amazing, the service alone would be a reason to return... But the food and service together makes coming back a no brainer. We did ask if we returned could we share a meal and were told yes, but if you don't get your own entree you are charged $16 for all the family style sides - not a bad deal. The prices are a bit higher than I like to spend on one meal - but the quality, portions, and service made it worth it in my opinion. The decor and atmosphere were very quaint. There is also outside dining.
