I don’t remember anything specific about having these doughnuts. They weren’t bad & they weren’t great. They were just doughnuts. I might have gone after the morning rush because there wasn’t much of a selection to choose from. I think I had a long John and I felt no way about it. Would I go again, no. Would eat them if someone else brought them, yes.Though there wasn’t much to choose from the lady at behind the counter was nice. We had a bit of small talk while I ordered. Getting to the location was a little weird. I think I had to turn on a back street or something. Like I said, not complaints, no compliments. It must be a local thing.
As always, friendly staff and the best donuts anywhere!!!
I love these donuts! So yummy and I don’t know that any other place will amount up to them ever!
It said Closed..but I rang buzzer and lady opened window and sold me one of their last donuts and a t-shirt for my Aunt Alice. I explained..Her and my Uncle Clarence owned the Mel-O-Cream donut shop in Jacksonville where the best donuts I have ever tasted were made !! Thank you for opening up for me. I can't wait to give my very special Aunt her gift !!!
gotta have them when I visit Springfield. The best donuts ever. wearing my new gear. Yellow hoodie and yellow cap.
Dear Mel-o-Cream, Thank you…I guess. When I was a child, I lived on the north side of Springfield. Mel-o-Cream was our breakfast restaurant of choice. I learned very quickly that your chocolate long John was, quite simply, the best donut in the world. As an adult, I married and moved to Okinawa, Japan. My husband was Air Force. My neighbor just so happened to also be from Springfield. We were reminiscing once about the things we missed from home and she said, “You know what I miss the most, though?” Well, I knew what I missed most, and thought any sane person would answer In a likewise fashion, so I said, “Mel-o-Cream!” She immediately said, “YES!” I knew then she would always be a good friend. The Air Force moved us stateside to South Dakota. All of our vacations were to Illinois since we now had children and wanted them to know family. I do question that judgement call from time to time. But every trip home HAD to include several visits to Mel-O-Cream. That chocolate deliciousness was ever on our minds. Upon leaving the Air Force, we decided to move home so that we could take vacations elsewhere. Not sure about our logic, but we were still young, and didn’t really know anything. How delightful it was to go any Saturday or Sunday morning (or if you had a day off during the week, you could sneak one in and didn’t have to share) to get donuts. ALWAYS, they were delicious. Something about that chocolate frosting… My kids grew up and 1 lives in Florida, 1 in Springfield and 1 in Rantoul, Illinois. If I visit them on a Saturday morning, I’m always instructed to “bring me chocolate long Johns “. My child who lives in Florida has to get them every time she comes home. I work in Hillsboro, so everyone talks about Jubelts in Litchfield, or Krispy Kreme in St. Louis. I’ve tasted both. Both are delicious. But I’ll tell my co-workers, “When you drive to Springfield, try Mel-O-Cream. Specifically the chocolate long Johns or cream filled; there’s just something about their chocolate. Best is the world!” Last weekend, I drove to my son’s house and, per the usual request, I was to bring 2 chocolate long Johns. Of course, my husband and I have to get ours as well. As I’m riding in the truck and eating my long john, I realize something is different. I inspect my donut and see that the chocolate looks darker. I take another bite. “This is the wrong chocolate!!” I exclaim. My husband says, “Yep, they’ve changed it.” Now, if you are not a donut lover, you may not comprehend the depths of my sadness here. But I have had a life-long love-affair with these chocolate donuts. Suddenly, we’re breaking up. Oh the sadness and betrayal I feel! How could you think this was a good choice, to go chasing after another chocolate, when the perfect chocolate was right there all along?! But, as they say, things change. As I get older, I am more conscious about my health and my weight. So I guess even though this hurts, it’s good for me. There’s going to be growth involved. For those who don’t care for the chocolate, they will be ok. I will not. However, I no longer crave your donuts. For that, I should be glad. It will be easier to attain my weight loss goals. So, Mel-O-Cream…thank you for that…(I guess). Sincerely, Trinity Flowers
