Best sandwiches on the North Shore if not the planet. The roast beef on a croissant (with just Bernais sauce for me) is beyond tasty. Strange place that’s a bit of a cluttered dump, bit I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Really big bummer! We have reliably ridden our bikes here from the city pre-pandemic. Food is amazing. But we just got here the first time this season and Al’s is still requiring masks :/ Obviously every business is entitled to their own choice but we won’t be returning until this unnecessary mandate is reversed.
I was introduced to Al’s Deli by my son who as student at Northwestern and lived a few blocks from the French deli. It has been open for 75 years and was started by the father of the two brothers who run in now. They have pictures of Paris on the walls close for few weeks every summer for the brothers to take a vacation to France. The soups and sandwiches are French influenced as are the packaged carry out items. I am a great lover of sandwiches and Al’s are unquestionably the world’s best sandwiches . That’s right! The best in the world. Hands down. The smoked turkey w/ with Swiss on a baguette is simply lights out. The soups are great too and much beloved by my wife. They also sell home made giant sugar cookies which call to me as as try to escape without utterly destroying my diet. I love the place. For those of your who are not enamored of fast food or franchises , stop By Al’s . It’s a delightful, neighborhood place with sensational food .
This place is an absolute gem. A French deli serving up some of the best soups and sandwiches in the area. All the things I have tried have been great, but the roast beef with blue cheese is to die for. Would highly recommend stopping by.

Al's Deli is definitely a go-to to add to your list when hungry! I am a bonafide foodie! ! They make a REALLY good fresh salmon with cheese, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches!!!!!! I get that every time I go! My mom gets the same thing and she LOVES their potato soup! I just turned my boyfriend onto them yesterday and he fell in love with the smoked duck sandwich! He said it was so fresh and the lentil soup was really, really good! I love looking at the photos on the wall of the owner's travels as well. He might have missed his calling and should have been a photographer as well as a deli owner! The customer service is always welcoming! I do prefer it when the owner is there for the quality customer service because he really does care about his business, but I know he has to take a break sometimes. ;-)
Spectacular. Best ingredients assembled into the best sandwiches. Absurdly good. Odd hours though. Whenever I remember Al's, they're closed.
Al's Roast Beef sandwiches & butter cookies are my favorite. whenever I'm anywhere within an hour of Al's Deli, i make a trip/priority to stop

Fantastic sandwiches, best in Evanston. Would be nice if their phone worked though so I could order for pickup (lines can get long)!
