At Yolk -- City Way in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, breakfast is a good business -- and the trademark of the franchise -- but lunch isn't bad, either. Located at 501 West Diversey Parkway, in the 2756 North Pine Grove Apartments, Yolk is part of a cafe chain that includes other Chicago area locations in the South Loop, Streeterville, West Loop, Marina City, Wicker Park, Oak Park and Burr Ridge. How good is Yolk's breakfast? Good enough to be voted the best breakfast in Chicago, Indianapolis, Dallas, Fort Worth and Boca Raton. My wife and I had breakfast at the Yolk location in Indianapolis earlier this month. We plan to visit all of the Chicago area locations. Lakeview is closest to our Gold Coast condominium. Open from 7 to 2:30 daily, it is best known for its breakfast offerings. But we decided to sample the lunch menu. We started with bowls of chili. My wife had a Patty Melt, an eight-ounce brisket burger with grilled onions and American cheese on grilled rye with a side of 1,000 Island dressing. I passed up a corned beef sandwich on grilled rye with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and 1,000 Island dressing (next time) in favor of an enormous and delicious Yacht Club sandwich, a two-handed triple-decker with turkey, ham, bacon, tomato, avocado, cheddar cheese, romaine lettuce and mayo on toasted sourdough. The gourmet soup of the day is another option.
I had this place all wrong! We used to order from Doordash and we thought it wasn't very good, but it's a much nicer experience in person. My son and I had the strawberry-orange juice, the salted caramel latte, and the all star special. I was a little disappointed it didn't come with hashbrowns, but it was still a tremendous amount of food-they have great sausage and bacon. The latte was a little on the sweet side for my taste, but still really good! Severs were also super nice. Definitely coming back.
Delicious food... Like to make a visit again.
If you have kids or planning to have a family breakfast, do not come here! This is not a family restaurant as it used to be. They had music, cursing, and using horrible language while we tried to enjoy our breakfast. In the kitchen, loud playing rancheras witch it’s ok. I prefer that style of music rather than feeling cursed while having breakfast—servers provide horrible service and are super rude. Our breakfast was horrible , pancakes never came , water glasses dirty .Waist of time and super dissatisfied.
Staff need a lot more training. Had trouble with basics like with water. Food was disappointing, and the grits were awful. I love grits and having spent a lot of time in Alabama, I know what they are supposed to taste like.
I write both good and bad reviews for establishments that I like and dislike. I don’t come on here just to attack businesses but I think my criticism with this establishment is worth considering to the owner/management and other customers. So here it goes...I haven’t dined in, only taken out, so can’t comment on the service. Pretty much every employee I’ve met while picking up were very nice. My issue is that the portions are very small for the extreme price (even expensive for these days with current average prices that have gone up in general) and there’s some carelessness put into some of the food.. such as every time I order toast as a side (I’ve ordered toast as a side at this location 5 times, so it’s not like they had an occasional bad day), it was entirely burnt, black on both sides. The omelettes are really good but for the price I can’t justify paying the price for the small size. Also the side of potatoes (no shredded hashbrowns but seasoned potatoes) are never totally cooked and half raw. The potatoes would actually be really good and enjoyable if they were thoroughly cooked properly.I don’t recommend this establishment to others for these reasons.
Anthony at Yolk Lakeview was a fantastic server and local host. He was attentive and helped us choose things from the menu which were truly unique and delicious. We enjoyed our visit very much. We can recommend the breakfast burrito (both with and without chorizo), breakfast potatoes, and the eggs Benedict. We also enjoyed the chocolate chip pancake. The lattes, and Matcha were delicious.
The staff is very nice and friendly. Quick service. The food is definitely overpriced for what you get. I had eggs Benedict with salmon and there was barely any salmon and hollandaise sauce. The breakfast burrito was just okay. Small portions for $16+ per plate. Maybe I will try different stuff if I ever go back.
I was really disappointed in the menu. It's 2021 and there wasn't a single vegan breakfast option on the menu. BUT the staff was extremely kind, accommodating, and overall so pleasant. The waitress helped me build a meal out of sides (potatoes and veggies, essentially.) The oat milk horchata cold brew was super yummy as well.I would love to see a tofu scramble on the menu! They're simple to make and would allow a lot more folks to dine here.
nothing special. savory food was ok, good waffles, weird mushy strawberry filled pancakes. kinda pricey.
