From a very moody foodie, this place is everything! I have no complaints about them or anything they offered but you know how smaller portions on beer gut can be. You want to order everything but at this price point, most of us can’t. I had 3 beers, an additional flight of 3, the crudo, the ibérico Presa, and the pana cotta and my Gah, it was so ? but I have to call it quits and pick up some Chick Fil A for my fat @$$ because I can still eat. I’ve been to over 40 breweries across the country and this is easily the most original with an insane food menu I’ve ever been to. Impressed is an understatement. So much I had to ask the hostess if there was a dress code when I walked in coming from work. Fancy but real down to Earth and it’s the full experience especially coming in early with everyone’s attention.
My husband and I love exploring different foodie places - so when we first heard of this moody tongue brewery and it receiving two Michelin stars, we were a bit intrigued. Michelin does seem quite snobby and they’ve snubbed quite a few amazing places in Chicago, so it seemed very surprising to us for them to recognize a brewery. We understand why after our first visit with the tasting menu. The food was both creative and amazingly delicious (which doesn’t always go hand in hand). The beer pairing is perfect and in my opinion, is way better than your standard wine pairing you get at other places (I am a bit biased and am not a wine expert). Service is very friendly, but is environment is far more laidback than some other places. My only complaint with the place is the restrooms - and I’m semi- convinced this must the only reason this place doesn’t get three stars. There’s usually a stall out of order and sometimes it shows signs of some irresponsible users…We’ve been here 4 times now - and it’s our new favorite place! We plan on coming for each season to see what’s new!
Unique and interesting beers. Wonderful food. I find myself routinely ordering duck when I go out to eat and yours was probably the most delicious I’ve EVER had, which is saying a lot! Having it paired with beluga lentils and pea purée was perfect and delectable! Thanks for a delicious meal and a great time.
Fantastic anniversary meal! Food, drinks, service and ambiance were all amazing!
Moody Tongue Brewing Company's non descript exterior hides a majestic space. Set in the far South Loop, the lobby and staircase is akin to entering a hidden speakeasy... Abundant dark wood and impeccable bar area, the taps shine and welcomes diners to try a pull or two. Employees are friendly and very approachable, from booking to service, Moody Tongue staff is impeccable. We reserved a table in the bar area and the space has a rustic, modern, yet elegant feel. Wood tones and metal all around reminds you that you are after-all dining at a brewery. Beer is front and center throughout the menu, tonight we started with flights of fruit and stouts. Three 4oz pours of liquid deliciousness. We indulged in appetizers of Maine Diver Scallops and Hokkaido Uni French Toast. We cannot rave enough about the explosion of texture and flavor in both, and will dream of the whipped Uni. A Black truffle pilsner helped wash down starters and the pacing for entree was spot on. Summer IPA and Weiss, joined our meal. Crispy whole market fish featured a striped bass, which filleted perfectly on plate. Preparation was not oily and packed flavor with cilantro, mint and lobster mayo. Moody Tongue's well deserved 2 Michelin Stars, shine through the comfort, care and flavors. Drafts are available to go in growlers as well as limited bottle selections. Highly recommend reservations through Resy as we look forward to booking our return tasting in Moody Tongue Brewing's Dining Room.
Overall, we were underwhelmed. Service was great in terms of refilling waters and clearing dishes, but it was off putting that our server told us “you have to order everything at once” and then when we did like instructed he said “are you kinda hungry bc that’s a lot.” We were rather insulted by that because we like to try a variety of food as we do reviews for Tiktok and have no problem taking food home. However, we moved forward and were excited for the array of dishes we ordered. Our excitement died there, because the majority of the dishes we had left something to be desired nearly every time. The oysters were small and average quality. We have no problem with smaller oysters if they pack flavor and these did not. The beet dish was too acidic for me, and I would have preferred more fondue cheese to offset that, but my husband loved it. I think my ‘we wish you were here’ cocktail that I had which was very acidic probably influenced my thoughts on that dish. Next we had the foie gras and olive oil cake. The foie gras was excellent but the dish overall didn’t sing well together. The rabbit cavatelli was my favorite dish, and I’d highly recommend. The pork belly risotto was such a bummer because the pork belly was over cooked and under salted, leaving it dry and tasteless, but the risotto was very well done. The uni French toast was super creative but not well executed as it was cloyingly sweet. The waygu, mushrooms, and cream sauce lacked the umami and salt flavor to offset the sweetness of the French toast. We finished with the New York strip entree which was under seasoned. However, the twice baked potato with trout roe and the creamed spinach that came with it was excellent. My husband had several beers which he said were very clean but lacked complexity and flavor. But the black truffle Pilsner was very creative and excellent. Overall, the quality of the food and the flippant service does not reflect the prices and the renown/prestige of the restaurant. We tried the bar restaurant to get a flavor for what we could expect from the dining room, and this told us everything we needed to know. Moody Tongue has mountains of potential, but unfortunately we left feeling disappointed.
What a beautiful spot tucked away in an unexpected building. Stopped by here before Brewsology Beer Fest on a Saturday night around 6pm. Opted for the Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner - a must try for $20/5oz served in a champagne flute (video unable to be attached to this review but uploaded to my Photos/media). You can taste hints of Truffle but also reminded me of Miso. Bartender was very knowledgeable about the beers and recommended the Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner be paired with their steak dish. Also opted for a Flight of 3 of their beers - I chose: Toasted Rice Lager, Sliced Nectarine IPA, Bourbon Barrel Aged (BBA) 12 Layer Cake Nitro Stout. All smooth, unique, and different than other beers/breweries.
In 15 courses I ate exotic foods I would not normally consider and loved every one of them! Just a spectacular experience. Have dined at many Michelin rated restaurants world wide and this might be at the top.
Wonderful meal and beer pairings - plus you can buy to take home. we are set.
We came for the tasting menu as this is the only brewery gets Michelin stars (in the US). Not all but most of the beverage pairing at fine dining is mainly focused on wine, so we were very excited about beer pairing as we love beers! The food was delicious, and with beer pairing it’s just as good as wine pairing experience. The price also includes beer pairing so it’s a very good value, especially the pour was very generous :D
