My friends and I decided to have lunch at Josephine's SoulFood Buffet. The hospitality was awesome! Most of the food was good, however, when it came to the peach cobbler, banana pudding, cornbread, and Mac & cheese they can't touch St. Louis. "There's no place like home!"
This place was under another name and was renovated. I thought they would have upgraded. $30 for a meal that I ultimately threw in the trash. Everything was so bad. Horrible. The mac tasted like store bought generic with vinegar. Why did it taste like vinegar. The Collard greens were ok. Slightly burnt. Maybe cut with another cheaper green veggie. Ok, now for the main reason I went there, Short beef ribs. Um no. They were served on a bed of dressing with is cool because I love cornbread dressing with my short ribs. The dressing was overcooked and slightly burnt. With a weird flavor coming through that's not indicative of dressing. The ribs were indeed tender perfectly cooked, but with no flavor. Even with the gravy, it was extremely unpleasant and bland. I couldn't stomach it. I have a strong palate for umami, and short beef ribs are known for this. I will not be back ever. Great staff and quick service though. I do appreciate that. But the food is not for me.
I wish I could give a good review. I try to support black businesses. Went yesterday for lunch only one other diner was there. When we walked in there was a foul odor in the dining area then we saw a dirty mop bucket with a dirty mop across from our table. It was removed after about 10 minutes but the smell remained. Non customers literally ran in and out if the dining area for whatever reason which made me uncomfortable. Service was extremely slow and our waitress couldn't answer simple questions about menu items. The dressing with my chicken and dressing had an old, slightly sour taste to it I only had one bite. The greens were ok a little sweet but my husband enjoyed his meatloaf with mashed and gravy. I had to ask for coffee twice and the only drink available was a five dollar glass of lemonade. Pass on the 8 dollar peach cobbler, thanks but no thanks. Probably won't be back.
I am an advocate and a huge supporter of black business....so I am very disappointed that I have to post this review. We took my mother Here for EASTER BRUNCH....Assuming that this place would offer the best in southern cuisine. A nice, hot , homemade, dinner on the southsideNot only were our sides served to us a bit cooler than room temp....The catfish filet was a frozen filet. Southern cuisine? My mother stated her food was cold and the server took it and brought it back HOT out the microwave...with the cranberry sauce on it...but the food was still cold a bit in the middle. Suggesting it had been refrigerated the entire time prior to our arrival.....We had to ask for water, after being seated a little while....and the server brought it back without ice.Nothing seemed freshly cooked but the frozen fish filet. To top it off while we were finishing up, another waitress walked by, stopped, and asked if we were finished with our hotsauce. We said yes and she kindly grabbed and took it and gave it to the table in front of us.I was rooting for them so hard...but a side dish was $7.00 a piece....served cold with a slight attitude from the server because we were asking for simple things , that we should have never had to ask.If you serve me a corn muffin, you know ill want some butter....and when I ask, you bring back cold, hard butter...to go on my cold, hard muffin. smh. Kinda disappointed. This was a cheat day.
The food was delicious ? Hot and fresh. The gumbo was very delicious ?
Food and service was absolutely great. This was my first time eating there, but rest assured I'LL BE BACK and I'll bring someone so I can impress them. Oh yeah good prices too.
I have visited this place many times in the past & I stopped because it was literally over priced below average street food but after watching the changes made during their exposure on the Restaurant makeover show I was excited! The food looked so delicious that i could not wait to check out the changes. Unfortunately the only thing that has changed is the look...There was no sign of any of the new food items on the menu that were featured on the show. The waitress was clueless-- even to the items that were on the menu. The place was dark & empty on a Saturday afternoon. There is a greasy burger spot directly across the street that offers all the same things as Josephines & sad to say that their prices are lower & the food is much better not to mention... I even got a smile from that staff. What a disappointment that nothing has changed here....
My first and last experience here. Lobster tail smelled of amonia. Still tried to charge me for the food when everything had a chemical smell or taste. The French toast taste old. My dad got sick from the chicken wings. I'm not sure if it's their water or what they clean with but need to be more careful.
We had access to their kitchen, and they were very accommodating! A gracious and hospitable restaurant! I would indeed recommend to all that I meet.
I have never been so disappointed with my breakfast, it was absolutely trash , the salmon croquet was horrible ? and how do you mess up a Belgium waffle??? Never will I ever eat from this place, it may be historic, but that's about it.
