Ordered a vegan sandwich and was given a real chicken sandwich. When we brought the sandwich up to the counter to point out the mistake in our order, the cashier argued with us and told us we had not ordered the vegan sandwich. As a vegan, I would not order a regular chicken sandwich, and I did not appreciate being called a liar as a paying customer. We had left a good tip, and had already overlooked the sub par oat milk chai, which we had watched become over-steamed while we waited for it. We will not be back and will be telling others about this experience. Learn how to treat your customers.

I’ve now been to Cafe 53 twice in 7 days, so I feel like I should share. In short, what a gem on 53rd Street. There aren’t many options for great sandwiches in the area, but this place is it. Last week, I got the acclaimed sumac chicken. It was tasty, and it was especially nice to enjoy it on their hidden back patio. This week, I got the Buffalo chicken sandwich on Dutch crunch bread. Sooo delicious. I was in search of a good sandwich and I definitely found what I was looking for when I gave this place a shot. They have a friend in me!

We ordered one chicken pesto sandwich and waited for 30 minutes. So we asked if our order was coming out or not and the employee said there was a technical issue, so the order wasn't accepted so he will work on it right now. And we waited for 30 more minutes which means we waited 1 hour total, but still we couldn't receive it.So we asked one more time, and he said he forgot and he will make it right away without saying sorry. Never gonna visit here again.

Cafe 53 has some of the best sandwiches in Chicago! The key is to get the Dutch Crunch bread, which is crispy on the outside but thick and doughy on the inside. My favorite sandwich is the Garlic Chicken on Dutch Crunch, and I think it's one of the best sandwiches I've had in the city. The mix of garlic and hot giardiniera peppers is fantastic. I wouldn't get too close to anyone after eating it, but the flavor is worth the garlic breath. Highly recommend

My husband and I are staying at the Sophy. We were looking for a casual place to pick up dinner and happened by Cafe 53. I had the Reuben panini and my husband the artichoke eggplant sandwich. Both tasted excellent. We found the the people working there very nice. The pastries and coffee looked delectable!

Got breakfast here two days in a row while in town. The lattes are so good and the egg veggie on croissant was the perfect breakfast!

You have to get the falafel and hummus sandwich with avocados and onions. The sandwich is so delicious it’s divine!! The people are so nice and attentive. It’s a cool spot with an amazing variety of options. Will definitely be back!

Food options, varieties , tasty, delicious and fresh , staff service, coffee quality , tea options, cozy environment. All these of these and more make it my best Hyde park cafe so far. 5/5

They have vegan and veggie sandwiches. Some of them are quite nice. The patio at the back if nice too.

When you first walk in, you’re greeted with a sweet aroma..as the first food item I noticed was pastries. What I ordered though was the Vegan ? Chicken Pesto & I must say, it was amazing! Perfectly seasoned soy based protein on a Dutch Crunch baguette. Super good. ? I will be back.
