This place was just what I like to try! Found it on Yelp, and the reviews were spot on. Easy to miss; small storefront with lots of taxis out front. Clearly a favorite among male Somali taxi drivers, who seem to flock here between fares. Inside it was clean but small and very basic, with a serving line up front and tables and booths in back. The guy running the place (staff? owner?) was very friendly and helpful, especially when he realized I hadn't been there before, and offered to give me a taste of nearly everything he had, which included roast chicken, a beef stew (suqqaar?), a bean stew, and a lightly-cooked cabbage/veggie sauté, all on a pile of a mildly spicy rice mixture. About 2 lbs of food, everything very tasty. You couldn't leave there hungry. He checked in with me before I left to see whether I liked it, and really seemed interested in my answer. While I was there, I heard that their breakfasts are good too (very Somali--stews served with flatbread mostly). I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town!
If it weren't for the buzzing parking lot, this would be a truly hidden gem. A great variety of delicious East African dishes at an incredible price. Don't be shy to come for your first time, you will certainly be warmly received and have the selections explained well. A friendly atmosphere and convenient location solidify Bulsho as one of my favorite spots in Chicago!
Looks simple, but this is is delicious homey style food. Also very good portions.
We found ourselves stuck in Chicago after our flight was delayed causing us to miss our connection flight. We were tired and hungry for a good authentic African meal...Kenyan meal,Even though it's not a a Kenyan restaurant, a Google search for Kenyan food lead us to BULSHO. We took an Uber from our hotel near O'Hare Airport's to BULSHO. The restaurant was 16 miles and with the usual Chicago traffic. It took over an hour.Upon arriving, I was a little disappointed to see the dilapidated and unkept location. Nonetheless, except for alot of men just standing and engaging in what seemed to be very lively conversations. The food was good. 3rdBut what surprised me is that there were no women. I respect their cultural
