Good food (fellow restaurant of Jack Nolen’s in Soulard); we have a small obsession with the fried chicken sandwich. Also great smash burgers. Straightforward ordering process and casual vibe. This will be a regular stop on the Illinois side for sure
Without a doubt, AJ's serves the best burgers. You can put all kinds of spin on toppings to compliment a burger. AJ'S does that well. But for me, it's the meat. AJ's perfectly ground meat has strong delicious beef flavor, perfectly seasoned. From now on, all burgers will be compared to AJ's as my new favorite standard. (I kind of hate you for that because your burgers call to me.) My husband loves the dogs. But what does he know?
You go to a counter to order your food. You get your own drink. The menu is limited. The food tastes frozen. When you check out you must leave a tip.
Really good burger, a double with everything. Really good fries, too. They're the tiny crispy kind.
We used to go to Jefferson's all the time but never went to AJ's till today. Got to be honest. I tasted better burgers at McDonald's. My wife did not like the chili at all. For the prices. Heck if I am going to pay this much for a burger. I want to be waited on. But you got to place the order at the bar. Then you have to go get your own soda. For the prices n quality of the food. We won't be going back there any time soon. Its a shame that place had good food at one time.
AJ’s is one of my favorite burger places. First of all, the people that work there are the best. They always greet you when you walk in and for the first time visitors they do a great job of explaining the process of seating yourself and ordering at the bar. When your food is prepared they bring it to you at your table. The menu is simple with smash burgers, smoked hotdogs, salads, sides and fries. I do visit quite a bit and I have some recommendations.Try the single (or double) smash burger with salted fries. This is a classic meal and for a while was my standard order. The fried chicken sandwich tossed in hot sauce with blue cheese dressing. This was a game changer for me and broke me from my standard burger/fries order. So delicious and quite filling with a side of fries. If you like blue cheese and hot sauce then definitely try the blue cheese fries. The beer selection here is great and they also have a small but quite good whiskey selection.Speaking of drinks, I highly recommend their bloody mary. It comes garnished with bacon, pickle, olives, cheese, lime wedge and rimmed with a smoky sweet barbeque rub. They are just about perfect and are an excellent way to start your Saturday morning. In fact, if you don’t like yours let me know and I’ll come up and finish it for you. There is nothing I can complain about when it comes to AJ’s…Well, I do wish the bar was a little bigger so more people could sit at it but that’s all I got. For those that are upset about no one waiting on you at your table, don’t let the fact that you have to order at the bar ruin your day. If that is the worst thing to happen to you then grab yourself a delicious burger and a Busch beer and sit back and smile about how wonderful life is.
Small menu, appetizers taste frozen, you go to the bar to order, you get your own soda, when you place your order, you swipe your card and the screen won't advance unless you tip, which is given before service.
Good burgers, good price, friendly staff, decent beer selection. Will definitely return.
BEST smash burger in town and in the area. BY FAR!
$6 for 3 potstickers… spent $25 total. Kinda expensive for the quality of the food. The potato salad tasted like mayo and the fries barely had any cheese. Kinda disappointed, was excited to try this place. I would skip this one.
