Terrible experience. They are 20 minutes from me. I’ve ate here Only a few times but their mandarin chicken was good the first time I ordered it and then the second (last night) it was okay but not as good as the first and they didn’t give enough sauce for the chicken but I ordered it again tonight hoping it would taste like the first time I ordered it but it was bad, it tasted fishy, and it was rubbery. I called them and they told me they had to call the manager and they asked me to come back in and I asked them if they can just refund me because to drive back is an inconvenience for me. And they got the manager on the line and she asked me to send her a picture as if she is going to taste the picture. ? She told me they’ve sold so much of it today and I’m the only one that has complained about the taste. Like she was implying that my food couldn’t possibly taste bad. But I sent this picture and she told me I had to drive over there to get my refund back on my card.. I was pretty upset because it’s late. But I didn’t express that, I just drove over there. So I get there and they tell me they have to take a picture and send it to the manager. I told them I’ve also sent a picture to her already. So I’m waiting and they’re talking back and forth and then the lady just prints out the receipt and tells me that the charge was voided. They made me drive over there for no reason.
1. Size of the dishes is not "Chinese" - you'll get at least half the size of what real Chinese restaurants give you.2. Fried rice is not fried at all.3. You'd better check their calculations - they miscalculated us twice.4. Why is the tea in Chinese restaurant who's culture is all about the tea - just colored water with no flavor?
I have been going to Golden Star regularly since 1970. The service is always excellent, and the food is good with generous proportions.
A diamond in the ruff! This place only recently caught my eye and I will be going back as often as possible. The food is amazing! Filled with flavor and served hot it was surprising how quick they are and the service was friendly and attentive! Do yourself a favor and try them out!?
Outstanding food. I am not certain that we got exactly what we ordered because since The Golden Star goes not have an online menu, we were going from the photos posted by other reviewers of their menu. We ordered family dinner number five and House Special Chow Mein, so it is very possible the in house menu was different than the photos. My fault, next time I’ll ask. It didn’t matter, though, we were very happy with what we got and every dish was delicious! My criteria for a positive review is that first the food has to look and smell clean and fresh. Check! It did. Very good color and texture on the veggies, the meat was clean, the noodles and rice, perfect. Everything looked fresh and smelled wonderful. Next, it has to taste great and as evidence that the person preparing it cares about the food. Again, check! It tasted great! This is the best Chinese foodwe have had in quite awhile! Here’s hoping that all following visits get the same wonderful results!
I went there with a few family members on Sunday. It was my second time there and the food was really good! Chinese food is expensive no matter where you go. The prices were the same as anywhere else. I wish i could eat there a lot more but due to the prices I can't. The eggrolls were especially good! I recommend trying it.
A long time staple to the Treasure Valley, and delicious food. Have literally been coming here for 25+ years and still as I remembered. Fantastic!Pork Hong Kong Special is like no other, and something unchanged over the decades. Literally ate here 2 nights in a row just to pacify a craving. Highly recommend.
I have been dining regularly at the Golden Star for 40 years. Always have loved it, the best in Boise. Understand price increases are necessary; however, the quality has really suffered. The eggrolls are so salty as to be inedible (always used to be delicious); pork and seeds were much diminished and the sweet & sour pork, mandarin chicken were just not as good. Hope things return to former quality.
My wife and I were just served rotten Mandarin Chicken. We could tell by the smell. After one bight we both decided to cut our losses and leave before we got sick. They still refused to acknowledge that the food was bad. Be careful. This place used to be good but it was not good tonight. Our food was on special so maybe they were trying to unload their bad chicken?
Our fav place to go for Chinese food. Great people. They remember you. They know many customers by name. They do a slam-dunk take-out business. Always people coming in to pick up food which is yummy btw. Place is busy whatever day or time. Service is great.
