Outstanding coconut shrimp. Delicious fish tacos while sitting next to the koi pond. Really cool atmosphere.
I have Celiac Disease and must be very careful where I eat...especially when traveling. Down the Hatch employees understood my needs and met them fully. I had the grilled fish tacos and added a side of veggies. It was delicious AND I felt great. The person working the counter also helped my picky eater daughter branch out and try something new and she loved it! The seating area is fun and has a koi pond with fish and turtles. Overall, a great experience here.
Ten of us went to Down the Hatch for dinner. A Saturday night so very busy, but to be expected. Ordering is at a counter, you’re given a number, then find your own table or someone assists larger parties in finding an open spot. You also must get your own drinks, your own silverware, and your own napkins, condiments. Other than your food delivery, no one ever checks on you - you’re on your own. Totally unexpected considering the menu prices. 3 of us ordered the lobster cheese sandwich ($24.95). No one cared for it as well as the ones we shared with. It had an off putting red spice shaken on it. Another ordered the Mahi plate (27.95). The mahi was good and mango salad okay, but It was supposed to come with a special garlic rice. Instead it came with a ball scoop of plain tasteless white rice. No server around to ask about. The lava shrimp appetizer was enjoyed and the lava shrimp taco entree was good which is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. All of us think there are better dining places in the area to choose from.
Really great food! Be aware that there is usually a line every night for this place (only like a 15 min wait) and it is self seating after you order. Food is still brought to you. We got the lava lava shrimp and the lobster and crab grilled cheese and they were amazing. Be aware that the lava lava shrimp are a bit spicy, too spicy for my husband but perfect for me!
First time for my clan, second time for me. The food remains amazing! Everything my party had to say: "it's amazing", "this is the best I have had ever", "I want to live here and eat everything". We ordered chicken and waffles X2, mermaid fries with pork, mermaid chicken, popcorn shrimp (kids menu), and the pig platter. Everything was devoured within minutes!
Great atmosphere, huge menu, and delicious food! This was one of my best meals while in Hawaii. They had tons of options it made it hard to decide what to get. The Lava Shrimp was amazing. Definitely recommend eating here!
I really wanted to like this place. We were actually pretty excited to try it. We waiting in a very long line that went up some stairs and down a sidewalk. Wow, it must be amazing, we thought. We got the local fish tacos, cheeseburger, chicken quesadilla and chicken tenders. We tried to find a seat free but they were all in the sun. (It was a hot day.) We sat at several tables until one was in the shade. By the time the food arrived 45 minutes later we were starving. (One hour and a half wait counting the wait in line.) Everyone ate the food and agreed it was ‘good’ but not amazing or really worth all that time.
After a day surfing (Lahaina Surf Shack is the best!), we went to this spot for lunch and it was incredible. You order at a counter and then find open seating in a courtyard with coy ponds and little bridges. Super charming and relaxing. The ahi tacos were the best tacos I had anywhere in Maui. Cooked perfectly and simply incredible. A must stop if you are in Lahaina.
The food is really good here. Best fish ever! I had the whole fried fish. The calamari was the best I ever had. It’s a unique place you order & then find your table. Family friendly as well.
All of the staff were so friendly during our multiple visits to Down the Hatch! The food & drinks were delicious too! Martin saved the day too by going to rescue my cousins sunglasses! He went fishing for them and found them in coy pond. He also was so good to her as the table was a bit shaky when we sat down and we almost went "down the hatch"; literally! We really appreciated his attentiveness and him coming to check on us throughout the night! Thank you, Martin! Jenny & I appreciated you! We came back the next night and had other great service from the guy that we placed our order with- sorry I don't recall your name!
