We were walking by with two boys who were having a pretty naughty stretch of the day. They were asking about ice cream all day but lost the chance because of bad behavior. We stopped and told them they could be getting ice cream, but lost it. I am writing this review, bc I assume the owner...overheard and took the time to jump in and talk to the boys as well. She told them many nice things which was great coming from another person besides mom and dad. Long story short, the next day was much better and we made it a point to go back here. Very good ice cream/shave ice combo!
Don’t waste your time or money at Local Boys Shaved Ice in Kihei! 3 of us walked down after dinner and waited behind another family in line. There was no one working despite it being within operational hours. Finally a young woman appeared out of no where and, without washing her hands, began making desserts for the first family. Something was definitely off about the employee. She couldn’t follow the conversation, repeated herself, her nose was running and she kept wiping it and blowing it then looking at the dirty tissue, touching her eyes and complaining that she had something under her very long finger nails. She was obviously high on some kind of drugs. With no posted pricing and her off behaviour, I asked how much the large was compared to the medium. She had begun making our first dessert when she informed us the large would be $16! Medium was $8 and baby was $6. We decided to share the large since it was so expensive but it wasn’t actually that big. And to top it all off, when we got to the ice cream on the bottom we pulled out a long black hair! Threw the rest of our $16 dessert away and left disgusted.
Best shaved ice in Maui! Period! Very local. Awesome flavors shaved ice is perfect consistency and the ice cream at the bottom is the bomb!
On a recent visit to Maui we wanted to try this shaved ice place and found out the one we had planned to visit was closed. Local Boys South has permanently closed. So we decided to make the drive to the other location. We were not disappointed! My husband got one with ice cream on the bottom and I got one without. After building a huge mound of ice and adding our flavors she asked if wanted cream on the top. We asked her just to put a little bit at first so we could try it! It was delicious. So all that being said, opt for the cream on top! It was so good my husband drove out of the way the next day to get another one. Highly recommend!
Just happened to see Local Boys while driving by. Glad we stopped! You will not be disappointed with the available flavors and the taste of their shave ice!
Passed by this spot mainly bc they had a sign that said they were serving coconut Glenn’s ice cream. Asked if we could just pay to just get ice cream without shaved ice and the kindly let us. As we were ordering I noticed one of the workers in the back was rinsing his long hair and the girl worker asked him to scoop our ice cream. His hair was still wet and had droplets go all over the place, tried to ignore it but as soon as he handed us the ice cream we noticed a strand of hair in the bowl. They replaced it, but we were already turned off by the way they handle food. None of them were wearing gloves on top of that
I used to love Local Boys years ago and was so excited to bring my kids here. We arrived and found out they were out of the vegan ice cream they advertise. That was fine, but sad. We then tried to order a small shave ice and we’re told they were out of smalls. I asked if we could use a different cup with less ice and still only be charged a small (our two young kids can’t eat that much). She said no. We’d have to pay for the larger cup. And…that’s when we decided to walk down the street to another shop. As we walked past the window, the worker was talking very loudly about us to a co-worker, commenting on how ridiculous it was that we didn’t want to pay extra for shave ice we didn’t want…that didn’t even have the ice cream we wanted in the first place. It was disappointing to say the least.
It was just ok. Not overly sweet but not noticeably flavorful either. The coconut ice cream was good as was the Kauai cream over the top. The girl making the shave ice was nice.
This place is one of the worst shaved ice places I have gone to. For a 4 person family it was 40 dollars, for shaved ice the size of a shot glass. To much syrup with not enough ice, not a good combination. If you want good shaved ice just go up the street a bit to the right of the shop and you’ll find the best shaved ice in Hawaii.
The worst shaved ice. Over priced since they conveniently run out of ice cream when you order. Melts in about 2 minutes. Save your money go down the road a ways to Ululanis.
