When we were younger, we used to go fairly often for family gatherings. I had not been here for 50 years, having lived on the mainland, but my cousin arranged a family gathering of about 25 persons to a venue where time stopped, everything felt familiar and comfortable and people had a great, great time because there was so much space to mingle and circulate. The food was absolutely classic Hawaii-Japanese cuisine, down to earth, Hawaii-style [not stuffy, fancy California/New York haute cuisine] but families, comfortable and nostalgic.....and the food was good. The miso salmon, teriyaki steak and tonkatsu was just as I remembered it.......strongly flavored, not subtle but just like food used to be when the Issei and Nisei used to go out. I had to chuckle because the spicy ahi makizushi was just like the Hawaii-Japanese used to make it.... big, rustic and plenty of filling.........no dainty New York style sushi and no damned chef telling you how it eat. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against fine Japanese food. In our younger days, we went to Nobu's and Morimoto's when they first opened and I still think the best Japanese meal I've eaten was at Sugiyama's on W. 55th New York [now closed], but Natsunoya was like grandma's cooking, simple, tasty and very comfortable. For those who may have not experienced Old-style Japanese food, this might be worth a go. The service is first rate as well.
This has a good write up so we decided to try it out. We arrived and immediately felt out of place. Nobody greeted us. We felt like we were crashing a private party. Then someone came out and said it was a buffet and there were no seats. We asked if we could wait, she said no. No room. Only 11 seats and they were full. Too bad because for such a large building it seemed like there would be more than eleven seats.
Great ambiance and food. Highly recommended them
I just love this place. It was clean, food was delicious and servers were very nice. I plan to have more parties there. You get private rooms.
Great food. Food is always delicious. Great atmosphere and accommodatiing staff. Nice view.
I'm so glad that this place is still opened. I love the food, the ambiance, the people, the location. What's not to love about it. Of course, I only come to private parties there. The service is Japanese-style. Very attentive and polite. They make me feel "at home."Up on a hill, surrounded by the neighborhood. No shopping malls or hurried crowds. Very peaceful. Its atmosphere is such that you can have a meaningful conversation.
Cute place. Food is good but pricey.
Beautiful location and view
We had a big room to ourselves and the food was delicious.
Great food, awesome sushi bar and chef. Always nice people and great service. They've adapted their menu to make it thru this pandemic, always changing and giving their customers what they want. You really need to stay creative nowadays and they've done a great job at it. Kudos to the owners and staff for keeping their menus and business going. Well done!
