Prices are way, way up there. Food not so great. Eat at your own risk. Once I ordered a chop steak that means normally steak sliced in pieces cooked with sweet round onion, maybe bean sprouts. They gave me super sweet teriyaki drenched in more teriyaki sauce. The sugar was horrible. Only thing I ate a long time ago from them was mushroom chicken it was pretty decent. I went there but when I saw the prices I was shocked & didn't even order.
This is just what we hoped for. We can tell it’s a local favorite. Walk up to the window to order and take your food or sit there under covered picnic tables. The service was great and she helped us with questions happily. My husband ordered a combo plate with fried shrimp , teriyaki steak, chicken katsu that came with rice and macaroni salad. He is a professional chef and restaurant owner and said it’s the best Mac salad he’s had, the breading on the katsu chicken and shrimp was perfect and the teriyaki steak was cooked and flavored perfectly. I also had the katsu chicken and subbed the Mac salad for greens. The sauces were good and the rice was wonderful. Our daughter said her grilled cheese sandwich was the best she’s ever had and the spring rolls are very good. We all agreed that the French fries were good! I’m sure we will be back again. Check this place out!
The customer service needs better customer service skills when asking for your order as well as reciprocating back to customers, w/o having sacasm and analytic replies towards customers wanting to order some types of food
Great food for the family, but there have been multiple occasions where I waited to order my food and no one helped me.
Delicious! Read a previous review that it reminded him/her of Rainbow's Drive In....maybe in the past, but now I'd compare Verna's to Leeward Drive In. This place was amazing. Great food options. Tried the corn chowder with a sandwich (tuna or grilled cheese). Tuna had lettuce and chopped onions. Great chowder, very well seasoned, lots of corn. Wish had more potatoes and/or bacon. The gravys on our two plates were flavored differently, but both were delicious ?
First time in Hilo, and Verna’s was awesome. Huge portions and cheap for the island. Totally grubbin and the workers were helpful and cool!
Great food and friendly staff. So good had to go back a second time. A must visit when visiting.
My wife and I got into line with another person at 6:30 pm to order food. They advertised closing at 9:00pm. The staff slammed “closed” boards over the windows without a word to any of us. When I knocked on the window and asked for an explanation a woman said they were short staffed. No apology, no warning. All three of us were upset. I won’t patronize a place that treats customers like this.
Verna’s Drive InI’ve been coming here for years and honestly am always happy with the food. The aesthetic of the place doesn’t do it justice.I started eating “Gravy Burgers” here with my grandfather when I was around 5. Since then it was always a place to go.Recently i’ve fallen in love with their baked Spaghetti. Its kind of wholesome. In any case i’ll be the first to admit if you base your decisions on how a building looks you’ll run from Vernas fast but if you give it a chance you’ll end up appreciating the home cooked vibe you get from eating their food.I recommend trying this Hilo staple at least once in your lifetime!
Not expensive and very good quality and big portion of food. I'm very satisfied with this place. Only problem was it cost 3.93 for a glass of milk. I could of bought a half gallon. And 2 gallons of milk back home in independence Missouri.
