Absolutely amazing! Well thought out menu to start with. Atmosphere is perfect. Decor is on point. We ordered blue cheese chips, bang bang shrimp tacos and chicken strip meal. We just felt like snacking and just from those 3 items you can tell that the chef of this kitchen is proud of their product. 100% fresh and delicious. Josh J. Our server kept my glass full and was also extremely helpful. Everything from start to finish was pleasant. Thank you Recess for representing your great town of Gainesville so wonderfully. We will definitely return if we are ever back in this area.
I always enjoy when historic downtown areas reinvent themselves with new shops and restaurants. Recess is a good example of the potential it has a diverse Southern menu at good prices. The portions are sizable, well-presented, and tasty. We sat at the bar due to big crowd on a Tuesday evening. That’s always a good sign. Our server/bartender worked hard and was making lots of drinks, while staying attentive. I’ll definitely be back when in the area again.

A friend and I tried out Recess for lunch yesterday. As is the case with many restaurants these days, they were understaffed resulting in slow service and a wait for the meal to arrive. We were not in a hurry so it was fine, but if one is on a set lunch time break it would be a challenge. I enjoyed their crab cakes and a curry pork soup. Both were very flavorful. My friend had the fried chicken sandwich and it was rather “blah” in regards to seasoning. It was cooked well, really nice crispy crust, and was tender, but it just lacked flavor. Of course if you dip it in the sauce offered then that would not be an issue. I have a feeling we will be back.
This is an interesting little bistro just off the square in Gainesville. We arrived about 15 minutes after they opened for dinner, so were seated promptly. The service was ok, and the food was good. I had shrimp and grits, and theirs was a little different from what I'm used to, but still very good. I thought it was a little pricey, but with the location being so close to the courthouse, I'm not surprised. It wasn't so noisy that you couldn't have a conversation, but by the time we left it was starting to get crowded. I'd go back again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it.
We're in town for a couple of weeks and discovered this gem of a restaurant. We arrived just as they opened and scored the corner spot at the bar, which is delightful in and of itself. The server was personable, attentive, and well informed. The bar scene was awesome. We ordered the specials and they were outstanding in every regard. It was so good, we're headed back there tonight as our time at Lake Lanier is closing fast.

Alrighty, first time trying this little spot! Overall impressed, the staff was fantastic. They were very busy and we could tell understaffed on this Monday night. Busy is a great sign! We were still greeted right away, even though our server wasn’t there as soon as we sat down she did greet us. So sweet! The house old fashioned was well mixed and crab cakes were out of this world.Now tonight we got both specials, the duck breast and the halibut. Both well cooked dishes with great components just a little under seasoned. Will definitely be back to give their signatures a try.Good job staff ??
Was the first time coming! Definitely loved the atmosphere, and the food! Server was wonderful and very personable! My friends and I enjoyed the portions and everything’s flavor was on point! Great job!
Wow is all I can say. I was put on the wait list for. table. The bar tender decided we would be better off sitting at the bar rather than a table. She told the waiter without asking us to leave us at the bar. Asked from for the manager and she was the bar tender. Will never eat here again.
