We love museums and exhibitions. St Pete is clearly one of the best cities for them. The James has always been on our to-do list. Bringing in the Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher exhibits finally made us make the trip across the Bay and check it off the list.Extremely friendly and helpful staff are there to help you.Be prepared to spend a good amount of time here. It is huge and there is just so much great art works to see and learn about.Obviously, the Adams and Butcher exhibits were simply marvelous. Those men made/make magic with old school methods.$20 is well worth the visit. Way more for the money than many other art museums.
I would like to highly recommend this Museum. I went in with no expectation at all. When you walk into the museum you will see that this is a first class Museum and the people are all around to assist you with whatever you would need. One of the pictures I have uploaded has a scan code that you can download the tour. You can also download this at the Museum as they provide you with a Wi-Fi and password that you can use to download the tour. My recommendation is once you go up the stairs you have a choice of going left or right. I went left but it turned out that I should have gone right that way you can follow the path in the correct order. Honestly really doesn't matter but if you go right things will be more in order for you. When I went they had a Ansel Adams display which was wonderful. They also provide public drop-in tours which are 45 minute tours with one of the docents. They also have a family activity guide on the second floor Landing kids and teens will engage their senses and get creative with fun activities along the way. They also provide a mobile audio tour that highlights a variety of subjects from Native Americans to Cowboys to Wildlife from around the world. You will need a smartphone tablet or web-enabled device and they have earbuds available at the admissions desk. The museum Shop is open during regular hours and it has many items from high-end jewelry to simple postcards. They do have a very nice cafe and I would highly recommend you go in there the bar is amazing they looks like you're in an old western town. The cafe sells a variety of food and they also have some beer if you would like they just don't allow it up on the second floor of the museum. They also provide lockers on the first floor if needed. Museum parking is available on levels 3 and 4 of the automated South Gore parking garage located above the museum enter on 1st Avenue South the first hour in the garage is free in a dollar after that.
Went on $10 Tuesdays and it was such a fun way to spend an afternoon. Beautiful collection of art and sculptures. We easily spent about 2 hours just browsing the different galleries in the museum. I had no idea it was such a huge collection. Loved the placards next to the art pieces with the info and history of it. The bronze sculptures have so much detail, it was so cool to see them all up close.Easy metered parking right out front on a Tuesday. Museum staff were friendly.
A wonderful Native American and Western art collection. I was amazed by this collection. Also saw Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher exhibit. Breathtaking photos. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. Will definitely return with some out of state visitors soon.
My husband and I were married on May 21, 2022. To begin, Valeria, was an absolute pleasure to work with. We had to change our date last minute and she made it seamless for us; she was always very quick to respond as well. This venue is truly magical, I am Native American, so it really made the day special. It was also perfect for our party of 90, we used all 3 rooms and half of the reception hall, which was more than enough room. It's truly the best venue downtown and if I could do it all over again I would pick the James Museum over and over again.
A great place to spend a day! A lot of art and sculptures to see and interesting write ups to each explaining who is depicted, the artist and generally a location. If you have an interest in the old West you won't be disappointed. There is also a gift shop and restaurant there and a huge variety of places to eat on Central Avenue.
One of the best museums of western art, wildlife, and native Indian culture I have seen in a long time!! Everyone should visit this place!
A must see! i had no idea what a great experience was in store. i highly recommend visiting this beautiful museum. From the minute you walk in, youknow you are in for a treat! I would recommend taking a tour with a docent, but they also have walking tours aided by your cell phone (remember to bring headphones). the tour was 1 hour 45 minutes and well worth it. you get a “brief” description of the many works of art. Simply amazing!
A very neat museum that you wouldn’t expect in St. Pete! Lots of interesting art to see, and the free coffee was great. The audio tour was interesting; however, I wish it covered more of the art. I felt like I was skipping over a lot
