There were six of us who had lunch at AJ’s today (4 adults and two children). It was a great experience. The food was wonderful. We had the peel and eat shrimp for an appetizer and they were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. For lunch, the adults had the red beans and rice, shrimp tacos, fish (trooper) sandwich and the Spinach and Artichoke dip. One of the children had the mini corn dogs. All of the food was cooked well and serviced in a timely manner. They were all great portions. The service was very good. Our server was very attentive and did a great job.
4:20 pm. We stopped in for drinks. Sent to the inside bar to the right. No seats at the bar. Sat down at a table for two. In the bar area. Rudely scolded that tables are for diners. Sent to another bar. In a lower area. Okay. No problem. Before we had a chance to sit rudely scolded again to go to the first bar. The one with no seats. We left.
Meh… Average at best. We didn’t get food poisoning and the music was good, so there’s that. Table of 4.. Spousal unit and I shared a crab balls, a sushi roll and the Redfish Trio. Crab balls were pretty good. Sushi roll was not terrible. I’ve literally had gas station sushi that was better, but that was a special gas station. LOL Redfish trio wasn’t awful. It was better than say, Red Lobster on grand opening in the middle of Arkansas. Small humans got macaroni and French fries. There was plenty for them to eat and it was decent. Came on a “free” frisbee. Server was very friendly but 100% non-attendant. 4 drinks - tea is $4, BTW - we got one refill at the end of the meal. I guess to be fair, we weren’t drinking, and she was working the drinking tables pretty hard. She was friendly, just didn’t care about our table. Tip reflected empty drinks.
We came to dinner here with our girls who wanted to karaoke, they were under 21 so we were told they wouldn't get a wristband for drinking. No problem at all! We could stay and they could sing til at least 11 pm with no issue. WRONG! At 10:00 we were asked to leave. We spent over a $100.00 on appetizers that we didn't really want just so our girls could sing and have fun for a couple of hours, then we were abruptly (politely) kicked out!
The food was not good at all.. I had the fish of the day and was the worst I have had. The entire meal was bad with no seasoning. We always see this place coming in for vacation and decided to give it a shot.. now we know.
Food was okay but prices were much higher than expected on some market items. Single server provided service for the entire outside and did the best they could but it definitely affected our experience.
Repulsive is the first word to come to mind when thinking of my dining experience at AJ’s. Thank God they have ketchup on the tables because that’s the only way you can get down the $30 piece of “fresh redfish”. I wish I had something nice to say about this place but the guy using the microwave behind the sushi bar really killed every sense of mercy within me. What a horrible and expensive dinner.
We happened into this beach-oriented restaurant after golf for a late lunch - early dinner. What a find! Everything was terrific! Amazing oysters on half-shell, (award winning) seafood gumbo, and fried oysters basket! Highly recommended! The beer and live music were also good.
The place is cute and kitschy, and seemed popular. But the food was not quite what I was expecting. Two out of three of our orders weren't right. The shrimp was overcooked. Our server didn't seem overly concerned with our needs. For napkins, condiments, etc. Maybe he was busy. Overall, not bad, but with so many choices in the area, I can easily cross this one off my list.
It’s a huge turn off when you’ve had a full day and just want to do take out so you can have a quiet cozy meal at your vacation rental, and all you’re told is that ‘we don’t do takeout, it’s done-in only’. I worked in the restaurant business for years, and I’ve NEVER heard of a restaurant turning away the ability to make money from a customer who decided to order your food. After deciding we would just order there and leave, the food itself was very unimpressive. Fish overcooked, so was the biscuit if that’s at all possible. The staff looked miserable the whole time, and I felt bad for the customers who actually ordered and ate there the whole time. Basically, it’s a dive…with rules, so if you’re looking for other than that, I’d steer clear.
