Visiting from Cali and found this diamond in the rough. Food was absolutely delicious. Need to tone down on the sugar in the fruit punch and lemonade. This restaurant has potential to be something great. People...get out and support this up and coming venue. You won't regret it. Arrive early if you want a taste of the banana pudding. I'd return again if I was in the area.
My family and I stopped by Mattie's on our very first trip to Miami. We met and talked to the owner a young 26 year old compassionate, ambitious young man working hard to provide soul food within his community!I was so honored to hear his story and deeply honored to leave this review. Please give him a chance.Everybody's soul food is different within "our" community, so please be supportive if his style of soul food is different than what you grew up eating. I thought the food tasted good.I will come back next time I'm in town. Support black owned businesses! It helps all of us! ✊?
I waited an hr. for a take out order and the meat was the only fresh item on the entire plate. The yellow rice was old, burnt and hard. The greens were EXTREMELY salty and over cooked and the one thing that use to yummy at this establishment was the cornbread but even that was HARD AND NASTY. I can't believe I waited so long for that awful plate of food. When I called the "restaurant" to report the problem the person that answered became defensive and had the nerve to have an attitude. This establishment has NO KNOWLEDGE of customer service and didn't even offer an apology ?. I love soul food but I will NEVER waste another penny at Mattie's @ Jumbos ?????
Everything was great. The food was freshly made, fried to perfection, seasoned well, and tasted great. My family loved it. The food was fairly priced. I would recommend.
Food was great. One of few places to get real soul food. Tho my tilapia order could've been maybe 2 pieces than one.
A bunch of food. I make it a point to go to a soul food restaurant when I am in a new city. Mattie's and Jumbo is in the hood but it appeared pretty safe. I had the fried tilapia, collard greens and mac and cheese. Greens were excellent. I didn't get a hint of any type of meat used to season them but they were favorable and seasoned well. Mac and cheese was good. They kept it simple, no Guyere cheese or anything like that. Just good old mac and cheese. Miami got and rice thing going on that I just don't understand. The meal came with a pile of yellow rice that I didn't care for. The fish was a 4, could use a little more seasoning but was fried perfectly. Velvet cake was perfect. Somebody spent some real time in the kitchen making it and they definitely did not make it from a box. Scratch scratch baby.
Fun atmosphere. You can do karaoke. Oxtails, greens, mac and cheese, dressing and cornbread-all delicious. Baked chicken-not so much
Food is always amazing! I go here daily and it’s never a miss. They give a great portion of food. I’ve had the shrimp *fried and grilled*, Mac, greens, yams, rice and peas ?? my family has enjoyed the meatloaf, fried chicken, baked chicken, yellow rice and never a complaint! Definitely go, don’t think twice. *it always a wait after ordering but it’s worth it*
I wasn't impressed with the food. I ordered the turkey wing dinner which only comes with one wing, an additional wing will cause you $5. The greens tasted vinegarly. The banana pudding was average. I won't be back.
I had bar b que chicken and it was very good. The greens was real good too.
