What can I say other than absolutely delicious! If you haven't been there yet I highly recommend! It's not some bland BBQ joint, it is very flavorful and exceeded my expectations. I didn't even want to go, my husband did. Now I will happily drive the 45 mins just to eat here. I think it's a hidden gem! The drink was delicious also! I think it was called piggy punch. We had friend pickles for appetizer, and I've never had them diced up and fried before, they were amazing also!
Stopped by after exploring the area some, and the service and food were great. Their cocktails are tasty to. If we’re in the area again this summer we will definitely keep it in mind to come back.
Absolute brilliant - catered for a party I had yesterday - wonderful food!!
Be sure and read very carefully we ordered a family meal for 4, but the only thing that comes with the price is chicken or pulled pork, they have all the other meats listed but you pay extra for others. We were expecting to pay $32.95 plus tip and ended up paying $40.60 plus tip and had five dollar coupon that we couldn’t use.
I went twice in one week and had a good experience both times. The portions are average to above average, service quite attentive. I had a brisket sandwich the second time with horseradish and it was really great. The prices are extremely reasonable. The menu is diverse and anyone can find something they like, so not just standard BBQ. They have really good beer on tap which separates them from a lot of other places. The other big score is that they are locally owned, so supporting them over a regional or national chain is an investment in your community.
Even in a town with lots of good 'que (The OG Sonny's, G'ville institution David's, 4 Rivers, Leaning Pig, Adam's Rib Co, etc), Top Hog finds a space. Not just the standard BBQ favs, but lots of new twists: brisket melt, brisket French dip, 4 Pigs and a Cow, BBQ Cuban, etc. Lots if great sides, but my wife says the cheesy grits are the best! Live music on Fridays and good daily lunch specials too!
My second visit to Top Hog. On my first visit, I had pulled pork. It was quite good and while it was said to me this is best NC BBQ sauce, it's not NC; it is good but not Eastern or Lexington BBQ. Tonight, I had the brisket. The sauce with it was a little sweet and very good on the meat. It's served on the side so you can add as much or little as you like. Both times I've had slaw that is fresh and has a little bit of finely chopped dark green leafy veggie in it, probably the best slaw I've had in a while (I love slaw!). I really like venues with live music and often that is why I'll go to a specific spot. The "music" being played this evening is why I left, it was less than appealing. The food is good but a little pricey, dinner with 1 beer and no dessert was just over $20. I'll go back.
Ordered the family meal for takeout. 2 meats, 3 sides and corn bread. It was great. Food was ready when I got there. I saw at least 4 tables for eating outside under cover and plenty of room inside. Also bar seating. I’m glad they are in the neighborhood!
The food was decent although not at all what I would call barbecue. I did not smell one whiff of smoke in the entire place! The wait staff was shall we say disinterested? at best. the prices were okay but everything in there was dated and quite frankly the biggest turnoff was the place was dirty! the floor was dirty, my table was dirty, trash all over the ground outside the front door. The place quite frankly was a mess.
The food came out quickly. Poutine was yummy and our sandwiches were tasty. The portion size was nothing to brag about, especially for the prices. There are a few tables for outdoor seating, however none of them were clean. They all had plates left from prior diners. Seeing as you have to go through the outdoor seating area to get into the restaurant, it is not a good first impression. We cleaned off our own table and never saw a single employee clean any of the tables off, even after our meal and we were leaving. If the expectation is for patrons to return trays and dining utensils to a common area (which I'm fine with, just make it easily accessible), there needs to be somewhere set up outside to do so to eliminate the confusion and employees still need to wipe down the tables between use.
