They're a cornerstone of the vegetarian /vegan dining community in Gainesville. After expanding / tripling the size of the restaurant, Reggae Shack has unavoidably lost some of its charm, however, the food is still fantastic. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the smoothies are still very satisfying. A rich and creamy blend, more of a fruity milkshake treat than one gets elsewhere. An excellent choice to help cool off from the heat of the sun, or the scotch bonnets in your extra hot brownstew or jerk. A major perk of the expansion is the covered outdoor seating in the back.
Stopped here when taking a Uhaul back in Gainesville and wanted some good food. Pretty sure they put crack in the food. We couldn’t stop eating it. It was unbelievable. I had the Tropi-Q burger and fries and the sauce on the burger was crazy. The fries with their “special” seasoning was so good. Tried to get the secret and they wouldn’t give it up. My bf got the oxtail and was tempted to eat the bones too. Can not recommend this place enough. We will make the trip from Ocala often for this food.
This is the best jamaican restaurant in town. I wish the waiting was shorter on pick up orders. I still had to wait on my online order when I got to the restaurant.
My favorite Jamaican spot in Gainesville! I feel like if you have a bad experience here, it must have been an off day or bad luck.
Nasty.. Not enough experience... thick gravy, too much curry powder..
The cashier that works there that goes by the name Micah offeres one of the best customer service I've seen and she makes the experience worth it, she honestly deserves a raise
Ordered the Escoviech Fish, it tasted old and refried. It was my first time trying it and I was very disappointed. I usually order the oxtails as a standard, so I decided to try something different, truly a big mistake. I’ve been eating at this establishment since 2004 and over the last 6 months, it’s been hit or miss unfortunately. I hate I didn’t take a picture.
Loved the vegan jerk chicken wings seitan version, cabbage and plantains. Definitely coming back.Only thing I wish is they use some natural materials instead of nasty cheap styrofoam to serve the food with.
Amazing food and great service. Highly recommend. 5 stars!
I’ve waited ten years to come back to this place and what a crushing disappointment! While the menu looks great-a vegan’s dream, the food was a let down. I remember a fresh, flavorful, fun dining experience and have compared every single Jamaican meal I’ve had since to this place. The first disappointment was that after placing an online order to pick up on my way through Gainesville, I arrive at the restaurant to find it closed for floor repair. I get a call at the time my order was due to be ready. I missed the call but assume it was to inform me of the location change. I return the call and they only say my order was ready, no apologies for the location change. That’s a really disappointing way to communicate a location change. I did look back through their Facebook posts and found one from 12/6 announcing a location change but honestly, they should have regular page updates and change their information on Google and Facebook. So I drive to the new location (also the location of their sister restaurant Southern Charm). The outside has trash piled in back and looks dingy and worn down, inside the chairs were on many of the tables and the smell of burnt grease and rotting vegetables/trash was faintly masked by what smelled like a dirty dishrag. I get my food without any exchange of pleasantries from either of the two people at the counter, no hello, no ‘thank you’, ‘sorry for the confusion’ no words at all apart from getting my name for the order. I get to the car and the food tastes Ike the restaurant smells, burned grease and microwaved festivals. The vegan steak sandwich was inedible, it tasted like burnt greasy fish and on a stale bun. The burger was ok, super spicy with lots of jalapeños,The coconut shrimp again lasted like burned grease. The fries and vegan wings were both very good.We made a special trip out of our way to revisit an old favorite but we will never make that mistake again.
