This stalwart hot dog spot has existed for as long as I can remember the act of eating hot dogs. Three generations of my family have taken seats at the counter. The hot dogs are classic. The fries will surprise you with a crisp potato fresh and hot. But, take cash. Because you can't use your card here.
Our 50th class reunion from William Penn high school class of 1972 is coming up and we decided to get some gift certificates from different places that are still in business around the area. One of them is the doghouse right off of Dupont Highway in New Castle. So I went in and got a hotdog with sauerkraut and mustard some fries and an unsweetened iced tea.The place inside is pretty much the same as it was 50 years ago back then.when you were 16 got your license that was one of the hangouts that you went to go to.The server Diane was great.Very courteous and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was good. They use to sell subs and pizza there but now they are getting ready to do breakfast sandwiches instead.I enjoyed going back in time at the old hangout.5 stars !!!!
This is a fantastic little "burger joint". Nothing fancy but great food and quick friendly service. Small menu of sandwiches burgers steaks dogs, and fries. The hotdogs are footlongs and come on a sub roll that is nicely toasted. I always get one with sour kraut and thought that was the way to go until I tried the burger. The burger is now my new favorite. It's not big but boy is it good! I forgot to mention they have Pepsi products which is an added bonus for us and they also have shakes and onion rings.
Lived in DE my whole life, and have driven past this place many times and never even considered stopping. A good friend of mine convinced me it was worth checking out, so we did one Saturday around 1 PM. Be prepared to wait, but the staff is very active in getting to-go orders out the door, and dine-in customers seated as soon as possible. We loved the old school feel of the lunch counter, and being able to watch the kitchen team prepare the burgers, dogs, and cheese steaks. The portions were not huge, but I left completely full, and the prices were cheaper than I expected. The menu was short, simple, and to the point. And the place is cash only. If you know what to expect, you will not be disappointed, very good.
We are not from the area and my husband asked one of the locals where to go eat lunch and this place was recommended. I love hot dogs and the one I got here was the best I've had in years! My husband got a cheeseburger with fries and loved his too. Sevice was great. The only drawback is the place is very small and people have to wait for a place to sit during a rush. Seems like they were remodeling part of the building so they may be adding places to sit. Personally I liked sitting at the counter as they cooked everything right in front of you and it was like being taken back in time. Another thing that might add to that feeling is they only take cash as payment, but they do have an ATM on site.
Place was fantastic. My wife had a cheese dog with fries, and I had a cheesesteak with fries. Both were exquisite. We will definitely be back. It had been 10 years since I had been there, and this place is awesome.
The staff is absolutely wonderful. The cheesesteak barely had any meat on it but brews was good. The chili hotdog was a little tiny dog with just a smear of chili on it. Again, bread was good. Was not impressed a bit. Also, it’s cash only but there’s an atm inside however, atm only works with certain banks I guess. $3 atm fee.
I have been coming to the Dog House since I was a child . My parents brought me here as a child and I loved it then and I still love it now. Not to many places have been around and consistent as long as they have. It's nice and brings back a lot of memories..
Not all it's cracked up to be..the chili was very bland and loose I waited for about 45mins for a hot dog on a roll, I could have went for a ball park on a slice of white bread instead, and would still have 7 left in the pack for a large date?♀️the fries weren't all that great? definitely a first and last visit..prices are reasonable but that doesnt mean too much when the food isn't all that great..unless someone can convince me to try something different there that is tasty me and my taste buds won't be returning..
So disappointing. Hot dogs aren't beef and taste and look as if they're pre-boiled with maybe 30 seconds on a grill. I brought 2 dogs but after 2 bites couldn't go any further. Tried cooking it a little longer at home, but that didn't help either. Unfortunately, I have no desire to go back. Fries were very salty and the cheesesteak was average.
