It is a small place, many would probably describe it as a whole in the wall, but it didn't have that feel to me. The chef, Peter, (and I am calling him a chef by the way he listened to and took care of us, plus the confidence he put in the food), was very nice and attentive. Everything was made to order. It was a combination of West African cuisine and a small sprinkle of American and soul food dishes.I had the crab cake sandwich, which used no nasty filler material, but mostly delicious crab meat and herbs, falling apart at every bite. It was definitely worth it, and for a good price. I had mac and cheese which was good, despite not using elbow macaroni (not sure if that's how they regularly make it or not...should have asked). My son had the grilled chicken sandwich which he tore up. The collard greens were flavored heavy with vinegar, so they are an acquired taste for me, but were better when I put lemon pepper and paprika on them at home. The blackened salmon I brought home for somebody else who told me, I should have tried their's, and that they would go back for more. So clearly that was good. It looked delicious, very soft and tender, not dry and white.I can't wait to taste the peanut butter soup (my favorite dish since I was a kid). So please support this establishment, I know I will! Easy to get to, since it's a couple of stores up from the Anacostia Arts Center. There are a couple of small 2-chair tables, if you want to sit and eat with your partner or child too.Pleased to meet you, Open Crumb?
If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Everything on the menu is good!! Even the veggies are to die for. I highly recommend the veggie bowl and the fried fish meal. The servers are also incredibly friendly and kind. This has become one of my new favorite spots. I literally tell everyone about it. You will not be disappointed if you eat here!
Oh wow! We had goat stew, plantain, brussels and the fried chicken. Just AMAZING! I rarely leave reviews but this place deserves it so I had to. We will be back to try new menu items.
Stumbled on this place by accident. Was looking for the crab fries which used to be in the same location. I ordered the fish bowl. Fish was good. Greens need some more love. Mac was basic..The turn around time SLOW AF!! Twenty plus minutes and I was the only person in there for a while! Person who took my order was the rude one. Light skin , peanut head one! Dropped the bag in my hand like I was annoying him or something! Patiently waiting for Kitchen Savages to come a few doors down..
I didn't care for the yellow jollof rice. No seasoning on the food. It was waste of lunchbreak. I got the veggie platter. The Mac and cheese and plantain were good.
The fried chicken sandwich for $7 is a steal! So tasty. I really enjoyed the Ghanaian peanut soup with chicken. I regret not getting it with fufu, but the jollof rice and red-red were a nice consolation prize.
I love this place it has the best Whitting and fried chicken sandwiches in DC. Also love the red red and peanut soup. Prompt polite service too.
I decided to try Open Crumb after seeing them included in Thrillist's "Everywhere You Need to Eat Right Now in Washington DC" and reading the Google reviews. We ordered the goat stew, chicken stew, jollof rice , plantains, spinach stew, fried fish, and a couple of other sides. While the food is not exactly nasty, we certainly found it to be under seasoned and completely devoid of spice. I have never in my life had African food with no level of spiciness at all. It looked and smelled really good, but the taste was disappointing. We won't get food from this establishment again.
I hadn’t had a goodt (with the T) fried fish sandwich in a minute (a while). I wasn’t specifically looking for @opencrumbdc but I’m elated that I found it. This spot satisfied my palates desire for some fish, and also surprised me with some West African delicacy!! Located at 1243 Good Hope Rd., S.E.Washington D.C. Open Crumb is a refreshing site. Their menu is simple, diverse, and super affordable all at the same time!! Their entrees include a $10 Spinach stew( sautéed spinach in a tomato curry with Jollof rice or plantains, their Roasted ginger curry salmon for $18 (served with rice or spinach stew), and their Goat Stew for $15 ( stewed goat on a tomato curry served with a choice o two sides). I copped their Chicken Stew with Jollof rice. This meal was plentiful, flavorful, and reasonably priced at $11bucks!! The Jollof and chicken were definitely delicious, however, this meal was more mild than spicy, and I like my West African food spicy. It wasn’t until later that dug into the bag, and found a container with the spicy tomato curry option...it was nice and spicy too!! Among their Chicken, Salmon, and Shrimp sandwiches, snatched their fried fish sandwich (pictured $7.50 with homemade tarter lettuce, tomato, mixed greens, onions on Brioche bread). Get this sandwich!! It was topped with 2 pieces of fried whiting, savory tartar sauces, on that Brioche bun...EVERYTHING!! They have sides like Mac n cheese, fries, Wakye (Ghanaian rice and black eyed peas), cookies, and Kale. I got their bread pudding. I wasn’t a traditional styled bread pudding...it looked like soaked French toast bread, deep fried. It was definitely tasty. Customer service was on point, and parking was so so. Overall this spot has some really palate, and wallet pleasing food. Trust me...give them a try!! That’s it. #friedfishsandwich #tartersauce #blackownedbusiness #chickenstew #breadpudding #jollofrice #bigschlimsreviews #affordable #southeastdc #deliciousfood #stamp #tomatocurry #tryit #foodie #thatsit
