I visited the Dairy Queen in Hamden at around 6:00 pm on May 23, 2022. I had to wait at the drive-thru window for at least 5 minutes. There were no cars in front of me. I was just about to leave when someone asked may I help you. After I gave my order I pulled up to the pickup window to find 4 young girls standing around talking. They gave me my order but didn’t include a sundae that I had ordered. I had to wait longer for the Sunday to be made. So the reason for the wait was not because they were short staffed. That was infuriating! If that continues they will be losing customers.
Full disclosure: I have only been to this DQ over two hundred years, two times. Today, Saturday 3/26/22, was one of them. I stopped on my way around to drive up and saw Blizzard Sea Salt, Toffee and Fudge. I was the only car. As I pulled up, I saw a sign to order at the back fence. I started to back up when a hand from the Order Window beckoned me on. I pulled up and ordered after I asked and was told the sizes. LARGE for $5.+. Transaction completed. Drove 3 blocks home. Weather in the 40s. No heat on in car.Came in. Settled down to have ice cream in what, in the "old days" would be considered a medium size cup. The ice cream was melted liquid. The "fudge" was not fudgy and was mushy. If there was toffee in the "large" cup I never found it. And when reaching the bottom of the liquid ice cream, there was a large "glop" of the fudge. Would I order it again? NO. Would I stop in another hundred years for DQ ice cream? NO.I gave 2 stars because the young woman who took my order and my money was courteous. I left t tip.

The ice cream is ok, but the staff can be rude. My last time there, I got in the drive thru 25 minutes before closing. They made me wait to order (no one ahead of me) and the car behind me was told that they couldn't order since they were now closed. They made him sit at the drive thru for about 10 minutes before informing him they were closed. I won't be going there again. There's a better one on Washington Ave.
Good ice cream but Short on staff.
Went to this location and found a sloppy sign that said, “Drive thru only due to labor shortage.” I found this unacceptable as this business should’ve been paying and treating its employees fairly to ensure this wouldn’t happen. I hope they start giving their current and future workers fair wages so they can stop losing employees who aren’t treated right. Maybe it’s time to pay food service people like they’re “essential” since they’ve been burdened with that label.Also, the sign is an eyesore. A six year old with arthritis could’ve made a better one.
