5 stars, great experience and will 100% be retuning. Fresh fish and great variety.
First time at Otaru and it was a great experience. Very authentic sushi experience. Probably some of the highest quality fish in the area. If you really love sushi then Otaru is a must try for you. If you’re looking for that all you can eat assembly line sushi, then head back to Sushi Palace.
INDESCRIBABLE!!! We did the classic 16 piece omakase, and it was phenomenal! If you are looking for a sushi of the highest quality, don’t look any further! So much better than many other famous NYC sushi places without a doubt!
Went on a Friday night with table reservation for a party of 4 and was surprised that I was able to make a reservation just the day before, usually difficult for omakases. There were ~4-5 very impressive pieces of the 16 course meal which I want to say made it worth it but for omakase pricing I expected a bit more. The thought that went into each piece was good but it could have been better e.g. the cuts and in the fish:rice ratio were definitely not perfect. Even though it was half the price of other omakases, it was certainly less than half the experience of the others. One member also had a mild case of food poisoning the day after, though I’m not confident it was because of this, either way all the fish tasted really fresh and clean, some just lacked the umami one might expect. Would still recommend this place but only if you’re in the area, I enjoyed the experience but would not make the 3hr round trip to dine here again.
AMAZING!!! I was there on Friday for Omakase and it was beyond great! The chef that served us was very professional. Besides the food, they are also doing very well at keeping things clean and having clear glass/plastic up to separate each sections. Would definitely go again!!
Very simple and cozy restaurant with absurdly high quality, well crafted, flavorful sushi. The ambience is utilitarian - all the focus is on the food. We have gone a few times and the omekase has been a revelation. The omekase is exceptionally even if ordered to go. On a relatively unassuming stretch of Temple street, this place is an under the radar gem that consistently puts out sushi that would be exceptional in any large city.
One of THE most amazing sushi place I have ever been to, considering that I have tried Kyoto's famous sushi place. wonderful people, family run business that is a super gem in new haven. thank you so much
By far the best sushi available in the New Haven area, probably in all of Connecticut, maybe in all of New England. The head chef goes to auctions in New York early in the morning to get the best fish (which is partially why it's so expensive). It's not just the best fish though; the chef's are not afraid to dip into fusion cuisine with the preparation of the sushi. I remember one dish with an amazing, light, salsa on the sushi that complimented it perfectly. I highly recommend Otaru for a fancy dinner out. Zero complaints on food or service, however, atmosphere and music choice could use a lot of improvement.
I don't want to post this review because Im afeveryone will learn there is an NY/LA/Tokyo level world class Omakase im New Haven for 1/4 the price. There 8s. But don't go. Please
A lot of the dishes were really nice; had good flavor and quality. There were some issues with service. As others have mentioned, the middle aged Asian lady is a bit rude. Like someone else mentioned, she seems to treat some customers better than others, probably based on her own judgement of how rich they are. She repeatedly told us about the $40 min per person like we might not afford it.. There are nicer and more tactful ways of making letting people know the policy. Food took a while to come out too there was a large gap of time between some appetizers and all the remaining things we ordered. Sushi was good but probably not worth going back honestly given the price and service.
