For my birthday, I had decided to splurge on dinner. My wife and I had been talking about eating here for years but always shied away because we knew it would be expensive. As such, I was expecting to experience one of the best steaks I'd ever had, but my wife and I were both disappointed. We enjoyed 30 minutes of Happy Hour drinks and shareables prior to being seated for our meal. Everything is a la carte, so the price builds up quickly. We had studied the menu on-line so this wasn't really a surprise. However, when our server asked us if we'd like some water as we studied the menu, we were provided with a choice of two different sparkling waters. We would have been fine with some ice water from a pitcher, but that wasn't even a choice. The server's patter seemed to push for what would amount to a three-course meal, with every item adding more and more cost. I know: I sound like a cheapskate but I felt like the goal of the serving staff was to drive up the bill as much as possible, not to foster a memorable eating experience, which is what I was hoping for. That said, both the server and his assistant were very pleasant and attentive, so I'm pointing a finger at the organization. I had ordered a medium 16 oz T-bone and my wife ordered a medium-well 14 oz New York Strip. What we both got were medium-rare cuts. My wife is not one to create a fuss and would not let me bring it up to our server. She was able to eat her steak but it was a serious compromise for her. I can tolerate medium-rare but my T-bone steak had almost none of that corner of filet that you save for last. Our steaks came with small portions of mashed potatoes (delicious!) and string beans (not tender enough). We also asked for raw horseradish. It was good and very potent but what restaurant CHARGES for that?? We decided to split a Mud Pie dessert. It was delicious and beautifully presented but it was very small. We may come again to enjoy Happy Hour but will not dine here again.
The food and the staff were absolutely superb! Kevin leads a great team at Cowboy Star. And Rachel was always there when we needed her. Almost intuitive. It was for our anniversary and Cowboy Star had a single red rose for my wife on the table and also had imprinted the menu with Happy 32nd Anniversary. They were quite thoughtful. Really great time
We celebrated my husbands birthday. It was wonderful. The service and food was wonderful.
