So, I've been going to Sumo Sushi for years with my family. The quality has gone down over the years, but nothing substantial, it was still generally pretty good. Today, however, was the worst experience I've ever had there. Some of our food arrived very quickly, which was nice, and doesn't usually happen. At our table some soup was spilled, no big deal, we wiped it up and left the wet napkins at the corner of the table. Those napkins sat there the entire meal. Most of our order arrived, all but one roll, the Vegas Roll. The rolls we did receive weren't wrapped very well, they just fell apart, but they tasted fine. Now those things, weren't really big deals. I've had the Vegas Roll show up in the middle of the meal before, so I didn't think anything of it. We get to where we're getting ready to be done and the roll still hadn't shown up, so I brought it up with the waitress, who was surprised it hadn't arrived, asked if I still wanted it, which I did, and I asked for it to go. Again, no big deal, it happens. Now, what doesn't usually happen, is hearing the manager counting our plates from the cook's counter, the cooks making jokes about how "Casper the ghost took it", as well as insisting that it was made, hearing the manager saying that they must've cleared the plate and that's why we still had all of our other plates, but was missing the one. Mind you, we hadn't had a single busboy come by the entire time we'd been there to clear plates, until after they had that conversation, where they took exactly one plate and left all the other empty ones. This wasn't quiet, we were not close to where the cooks were, and we could hear them very clearly. It was incredibly rude and unprofessional. When the waitress came by with the check, we let her know we could hear the cooks and the manager, told the waitress which plates we got and what had been on them. I felt pretty bad that she felt terrible, because it's not her fault they were being loud, so we made sure to leave a good tip for her. However, I cannot believe that they were being so loud and having this conversation so near to the customers, it's one thing to have that conversation in the back, it's a completely different one to have in the front. I can definitively say, that was the last time I'll be eating there.
Been coming here for years. It's not the best sushi I've had but it's consistent with good food, service, and a nice selection. I love it here and for the price you can't go wrong. Sumo sushi is a good spot for that craving.
First time and last. Wife had sashimi and salmon combo, salmon very odd tasting and sashimi all tasted as though it was frozen. No flavor and dense. I had the teriyaki chicken and steak. I almost couldn't get the chicken down even though bathed in teriyaki sauce. So overcooked and dry no amount of sauce could help it. Steak I am still chewing. Only gave it 2 stars because staff is so friendly. You want great sushi, Anaba Sushi near Oxnard Shores is the best,...Still. Hate giving bad review but went based on all the great reviews and it is so off it's not worth the $70 we paid with no alcohol.
1st time here... UDON was amazing but maybe more Udon than onions next time I'm not petty and I'm not give it 4 stars because of it... it was great but just that one little detail
Food is delicious, they give you huge quantities, and it’s relatively inexpensive for what you get! Service was great as well. I am definitely recommending this place to my friends, one of the better Japanese restaurants in the county!
We went for the happy hour, the busboy and the runners were more friendlier than the servers. Don't forget to tip your busboy!!! Food was good. I think I was too drunk to look at the receipt but for 3 adults and a kid at happy hour menu we were charged full price.
Stopped by towards the end of their happy hour around 6pm. I understand you might be busy, but sushi can’t be even eaten if the rolls are falling apart. After I complained that the rolls fell apart, a manager came, saw how the rolls are a mess, all she said was “oh, ok… would you like a fork?” Seriously!! Offer me a fork? Might as well give me the rolls before you roll them with a spoon.
Fresh menu items, great service and very happy $ hour!
Rainbow Roll and Sumo roll were great. Kids had hibachi chicken teriyaki.
Good food. Happy hour is awesome here. Service can be hit or miss, it’s not horrible service but they get busy and you can tell.
