We visited this restaurant at the recommendation of our concierge from the Ritz Carlton ordered the bison steak ordered it medium rare and it came out super rare almost still moving asked to speak to the waitress about getting a different stake, manager came over and said they would cook the steak a little further my concern was that it would be tough because they already had cut the steak into pieces she assured me it would be fine brought the steak back over cooked and very tough, I told her I couldn’t eat the steak in the condition that it was in and just to make a concession on my bill. she said she would take it off the bill completely then turned around and charged me $25 apiece four martinis to the tune of $100. questioned her about that bill and she said welcome to LA. The food was horrible and the service was worse. So go to this restaurant if you want to be cheated.
Having tried a variety of beef cuts in wet / dry aged, I decided to order the 35 day dry aged ribeye from Charcoals special menu. The server mentioned it was without bone, which was ok by me, so we ordered medium.I’m not sure why but the meat was the toughest / rubberiest cut I’ve tasted in years. It tasted more like a NY cut (with stringy tendons) rather than a fat layered ribeye. Everything else was great - the drinks, veggies, chicken wings.. but at $4.20 an ounce, if this was the “best” Charcoal can offer, I’m sorely disappointed.
Charcoal is a carnivore’s paradise. So much better than typical BBQ joints where the cuts are less desirable and drowned in sauce. The sauces are served on the side because the dishes stand on their own.We had happy hour with Brian at the bar and he was fantastic! He was super fun and easy going, offering heavy pours and great cocktails. Happy Hour was a great value: the wings are delicious and so were the burgers. Would definitely recommend!
This place is excellent! Unique charcoal/flame cooking with unique marinades renders an unforgettable and delicious flavor profile. Aged duck is without doubt the best duck ever, anywhere. Service is also top notch. When one of the dishes arrived overcooked, Tammy, the manager, came to our table to apologize and completely took care of us. Can't wait to go back.
They're family style portions. Great portions. Everything was amazing. I recommend following the chef's recommendations on cooking suggestions (e.g. medium rare, medium, etc.)And whatever you do, make sure you get dessert. Especially the chocolate peanut butter one. Also, the French press coffee is family style as well.
Not to be missed steak. Wonderful selection. Perfectly cooked. Full bar and quality wine wine. Get the turnips as a side or appetizer.
Super funky and friendly staff make this retro feeling spot easy to slide into. We sat on the patio which gave us the bonus opportunity to walk behind the bar and through the back kitchen - the vibes were great. My wife loves some good cocktails and veggies and Charcoal delivered with delicious creativity on both. The wings were so good (especially with their 3 signature dipping sauces) that we didn’t mind getting messy! I loved the steak but the peanut butter chocolate cake with caramel peanut ice cream stole the show.. Our waiter Frank was so great. Loved this little spot. We’ll be back. Respect
Five star food and service. Went there twice in one week during a recent visit to Southern California. A wide variety of entrees and sides superbly prepared.
Delicious food , Fabulous atmosphere Great staff
Food and service excellent. The charred vegetables are especially delicious. In the time of Covid, we felt safe eating outside on their improvised patio. I wish we didn't have to walk through part of their kitchen, and get close up with ducks et al that are drying. But, compromises are required at this time.
