The food was tasty, but WAY overpriced for what we received. I know we’re in So. Cal. and costs are higher, but Chez Jay was pricier than most we’ve been to.
Everything was PERFECT - great ambiance, perfect staff, delicious dishes and desserts, fabulous drinks, super music, wonderful place, very cosy, wonderful people, perfect location, best interior design, great vibe. This restaurant deserves at least 1 Michelin star. Chez Jaz is the only thing worth returning to Santa Monica. Unique in every sense. Excellence has a new name - Chez Jay. They are JUST GREAT!!
Stopped in for a bite when we saw the restaurant, because, you know, the Goliath connection...Our server was so charming and efficient! Prices are fair for a drink and nosh. The outside seating is lovely, away from traffic with both sun and shade. A very nice experience.
Stopped in for dinner because it was close to our hotel. Enjoyed the food and the drinks. Wife had swordfish and I had the beef. Both enjoyed our meals. Stopped back next day for drinks in the outdoor patio that was fun. Learned the sorted history of the restaurant which made it even better.
We had a delicious dinner at in the quaint, dark Chez Jay. We were thankful we had reservations for our family of 5. We were seated immediately even though the restaurant was very busy. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly and quick. You could sense the history in the walls. It was a fantastic recommendation from a local. Much better than the commercial, chain restaurants down the street.
The hidden gem of Santa Monica. After checking out other crazy pricey restaurants near Santa Monica central I stumbled on this quaint neighborhood spot.Im a single traveler.Friendly staff. Accommodating bartenders. Very reasonable prices. I came back each night I was here at least for a drink or 2 and dinner.I felt like I was truly in a neighborhood favorite !
Best dining experience in Santa Monica. Sure, you can have a fancier dinner elsewhere, but at Chez Jay you can a) get a table easily, b) have a great steak, c) eat at a historical restaurant, d) for a price that’s ridiculously low for Santa Monica standards. The only reason this place doesn’t have a line out the door at all times is because the tourists don’t notice it when they walk by.
The owner came by our table and was very friendly, the atmosphere and other patrons were amazing. My friends and I are already planning to come back.

Historic restaurant in Santa Monica. I've wanted to go to Chez Jay ever since I saw the movie A Single Man with Colin Firth as a couple of key scenes were filmed there. The vibe inside is very retro and intimate with charming lights and good music playing. The food is excellent, steaks and fish and tasty appetizers. It is small and reservations are suggested. Highly recommend for a unique dining experience!
