Absolutely delicious bakery. I would love to come back and try more pastries. The coffee was very delicious and not bitter at all. I had the apple chicken Brie sandwich and was in love with it. Saw some of the cakes they make and they look just beautiful.
The Buttery is kind of like a slice of home. I know to expect good things, and generally, such are delivered.However.... We placed a pre-order for a cake and cupcakes over the phone, and were told it would be ready to be paid for when we came to pick it up. I get there to pick up the cake ... there is no cake. Even though it had been confirmed at 10am that morning that said cake would be ready. Definitely unexpected and I was bummed they falsely accepted and confirmed an order.I want to shout out Hannah for coming to the rescue and setting us up with everything we had ordered, complete with a signed cake. As someone who works in food service I was seriously impressed with her genuine compassion and drive to make the situation right. She saved the day and made a 13 year old bday girl sooo so happy. Thank you.2 stars for the ordering hiccup. That sucks and I know you guys can do better.5 stars for the customer service. Also as a side note 5 EXTRA stars for the signage. Couldn't imagine a better way to communicate this to customers.
I've been going to the Buttery for over 20 years and am sad to report that whatever changes they've been forced to make through the pandemic have not been kind to their food. I've tried it several times recently hoping that they temporarily lost their way, but there is just no excuse for salads with wilted lettuce and veggies clearly past their prime and $4 lemonade which used to be fresh squeezed literally being poured in front of me from a Kirkland bottle. It makes me wonder what changes they've made to ingredients on the bakery side too. The Buttery is so loved because of the care they put into the food, and until that returns, I'll be going elsewhere. Santa Cruz is not short on great bakeries.
I’ve been really disappointed in the quality of their sandwiches since the business was sold to new owners. Today I had a very bland curried chicken salad sandwich (ordered as takeout) that had many bits of cartilage mixed in the chicken salad. The roll it was served on was too dense and chewy, too, so when I bit unto the sandwich the filling — which was so chopped up it was like a chicken purée — oozed out. And there was just one, flaccid piece of lettuce in there. Just an unpleasant experience, overall, which I will. It repeat. Some of the baked goods here are still okay, but the sandwiches are below mediocre.
This place has been around for as long as I can remember. It’s definitely a Santa Cruz staple. They have the best cakes around. Delicious pastries and also terrific food. Great breakfast sandwiches, amazing salads and sandwiches. I’ve never had anything I didn’t like here. They have great outdoor seating. Plenty of seating and good parking.Today I picked up some pecan sandies and cupcakes. Both were incredible!
The Buttery rounded out a great Easter Brunch. The bear claw ring was devoured almost instantly and the delicious cherry pie was, quite literally, the cherry on the top of a wonderful meal. Thanks Buttery, we will be back for Thanksgiving and Christmas desserts, (and also sandwiches here and there).
So many of the familiar faces of people who worked here forever are gone. I do not believe the new ultra-capitalistic Korean businessman who bought this place understands the previous owners french inspired magic! One of the amazing girls who worked here for decades (neighbor too) was proud of her previous boss's generously financed trips to France to brush up annually on her french baking magic!!! With our fingers crossed however we still bought a cake for all of our staff as a birthday tradition from the buttery and it was shocking to see they have changed either their recipes or ingredients- same quality as average store bought. I can tell they are trying to mimic the old buttery but also noticed the coffee station was dirty...This place may still have the name The buttery...But our local legend The Buttery is no more. Sad to see and hear that not only did the once warm family like work environment change for the employees but then their positions were replaced with new positions that pay much less with no perks.....and the baked goods are still beautiful looking but just about average....
They are still requiring face coverings, which is a bummer. The variety is large and the service is nice. Our server packed the different baked goods that we ordered very nicely in the bakery boxes. But I would suggest you go there in the AM when things are fresh.
Came here because of tripadvisor recommendation and convenience, however for the for the price and destination I expected at least a high quality breakfast sandwich and good coffee. this was our first time here however I could not justify returning, we ordered a simple bacon and egg breakfast sandwich and a coffee. The atmosphere made us uncomfortable as we waited and when we got our food and coffee the bacon was burnt and absolutely terrible, and the coffee was mediocre at best. for a 15 bagel shop breakfast sandwich I hoped two hungry adults and a hundred dog could at least finish one of them. We could not..
One of our favorite places to have breakfast on the weekends. We enjoyed it so much more in the past, but so much has happened due to the pandemic. I’m no way do I blame the business for disparities surrounding staffing. I just miss the warm and welcoming casual nature of this spot. It’s more transactional and fast paced but still good.
