I was delighted to find this top-rated Mediterranean restaurant in my new neighborhood, and was eager to try it out. However, I was disappointed with the quality of the food served (lamb chop plate). The Greek salad tasted good. However, the lamb chops I ordered were dry, lukewarm, and did not taste fresh, making me suspect they might had been previously cooked and were reheated before being served.
Great hospitality and good food. They made jain wrap for me. Falafel and hummus are available without onions and garlic.
Not going back here. The falafel was so dry that I could barely swallow it. The hummus was literally bubbly - as in fermenting, because it was bad. And instead of the regular fries I ordered, I got sweet potato fries (very soggy ones). The bad hummus though is the one that really upsets me - how can they sell food that's gone off?!
2018;One of my family's favorite mediterianian restaurants in bay area. No waiting time. great falafel plates and sandwiches. you gotta try it.Update; 2022The place has changed so much since the last time we were here before the pandemic started. They have added more items to the menu like boba tea. But, I don't think addition of Asian style boba tea is not very aligned with the theme of the restaurant. It appears the ownership has changed so did the vibe of this place. Not sure I will come back. Definitely not as clean as it was in the post.
Terrible quality food. How in the heck do they have almost 5 stars?? I got the standard entree plate with lamb, hummus, “Israeli salad”, rice, falafel and pita. The only things that tasted edible were the falafel (which was fresh) and the pita bread- which I’m sure they source from somewhere else. My first hint my meal wasn’t going to be good was when I could hear the microwave reheating it, letting me know they don’t make most of their food fresh. The hummus, their supposed staple item, was probably the most bland and flavorless hummus I’ve ever consumed as was the salad. You could tell it was the most basic of basic ingredients - canned chickpeas, tahini, oil, maybe some salt. The lamb (probably overcooked from being reheated), was almost black and definitely tasted old and reheated. At $18 for a small plate of lifeless, microwaved food, I have to say, thanks Village Hummus for the biggest ripoff I’ve had in a while.
We recently moved to San Mateo and discovered Village Hummus. The food tastes amazing. We always place the order online and pick it up and the food is prepared exactly as ordered. Our go to items are the Grilled Chicken Skewer Plate and Chicken Schnitzel Plate.
Service is well-intentioned but disorganized. Decor is dim and not really welcoming. The food was quite good though, we would eat here again. And a good price compared to other restaurants in the area.
Great food & excellent service! Stopped by here after work and had a really tasty Falafel rice bowl. The Hummus was also super flavorful and creamy paired with the warm fluffy Pita. 10/10 would recommend. Also if you have any dairy or egg allergies they have a fresh made to order vegan chocolate croissant! I will be happily returning to support this business.
I truly admire the food quality, authenticity, tastiness, freshness, and flavors that Village Hummus brings to the table. Believe me when I say that there is not one Mediterranean restaurant in the Peninsula that can compare to Village Hummus’s food. Being a huge foodie, I’ve been to plenty of Mediterranean restaurants here in the Peninsula. I can honestly say that many of them lack so much quality and flavor. However, this is not the case with Village Hummus’s food. Their food is incredibly delicious and hits all the right spots! Now I can finally say that I have a favorite Mediterranean restaurant to order food from! The falafels, meats, hummus, turmeric rice, and salads are all to die for! I’m a huge fan of their baked goods, bubble teas, schnitzel plate, and the falafels of course! There are a variety of options to choose from and you will never get bored from eating here! Their beverage choices and diverse menu options are super impressive. All your cravings will be satisfied here! I keep coming back to try new items and I am never disappointed. I always feel highly satisfied and happy after eating food from here. This restaurant is very vegan/vegetarian friendly too! Aside from the wonderful food, the restaurant is well maintained. It is clean and the staff is very friendly! I would encourage all of you to come and support this incredible small business :)
Edit- I changed my rating from. 2 to a 3. I think needed to reassess. I knew the food before the pandemic so in comparison it is so much worse, especially the hummus (lacking enough tahini, the expensive ingredient. It should be creamy but it wasn’t). If you have never been here before covid, you might really like the tender and flavorful chicken. The pita is fluffy and decent.Salad was definitely bitter and making other things taste bitter.I don’t appreciate the owner’s responses. :/ not in great taste. She’s very friendly in person. I hope she will try some really great hummus and know that this hummus isn’t that great. I think even store bought might be better.Original review: This place used to be good before the pandemic. It looks like it had a change of ownership. The menu is difficult to understand. The salad was very bitter and the hummus is the worst I’ve had from a restaurant. (When it was one of the best I’ve had). Chicken somehow is bitter too. I remember the pita was very good, but it’s now just okay. Not coming back. Sorry. It’s just so bad in comparison
