A delicious culinary destination tucked away on a fun little side street in San Mateo. The food here is fresh and bright. I’ve visited a dozen times over the years and never been disappointed. My favorites are the special dishes they have every day but also the regular items like pork tenderloin and spaghetti with meatballs. The desserts are yummy and they have an extensive wine list.
A tiny Italian restaurant in San Mateo, perhaps family owned. We went for lunch and I should admit we had one of the best Italian food in recent times. The taste was excellent and the owner/server was super friendly. I’ll highly recommend this place if you’re in the area looking for Italian food.
We drive a few hours for this amazing food. No one does gnocchi like this chef. Best we have ever had. The other dishes are delicious too. We come for the home made pasta as often can.
I spent my birthday on this place due a friend recommendation! I’m giving two stars because the manager had a pretty bad attitude. From the kitchen we heard her rude comments about us, my companion and I we are Spanish speakers and we understand (They maybe don’t know a lot people we can understand that language). She was pretty radical with other costumer was pretty kind but behind she made bad comments… The male waitress was pretty nice and kind! Food it’s not too bad, just OKwe spent about $200 and it not worth! I’ll never back
I don't usually leave reviews but today I was compelled to do so. I just left the restaurant sorely disappointed. My friend knows the owner who seems to be a nice person, but the female server, however was another story. She was kurt, rude, seemed to be rushing us to leave the restaurant because we were taking long because we were celebrating my friend's birthday! She didn't seem to understand visual impairment, I am disabled and she didn't even know how to handle taking my card from me at the table. I'd rather doordash this place and pay the exorbitant fees then come back!
Wonderful Italian food Affair !that goes beyond a dinning experience with a warm welcoming friendly staff! Thank you Chef Owner Mario
I am in town for work, and my client chose Sole by chance—it was close, we were feeling Italian, and the dining room was open. What a pleasant coincidence! Fantastic service, our server was very friendly and accommodating. The bread and oil was amazing, the Caesar salad was fresh and home made. We were deciding on several entrees, there were so many great choices, I went with the truffle gnocchi—top notch, pillowy, tons of flavor, no shortage of truffle. I couldn’t stop eating them! I would definitely recommend. One of my companions was on the fence between lasagna and another meal, and ultimately did not choose the lasagna. When our waitress came back with the entrees, she brought a sample of the lasagna for us to try. The sauce is home made, big chunks of sausage, thick noodles. It was to die for. Please do yourself a favor and visit Sole—I will be in the area frequently and I plan to come back soon.
Great place and great service, would totally go back
Amazing food and super friendly service! The place where I tried the most delicious gnocchi in a world (:Soft, flavorful and melting in my mouth. Can’t stop eating them even though was not too hungry! Their capreze salad and bruschettas are true and delicious as well. The chief and owner of Sole Mario is real artist so any item of their menu is polished by years of cooking and improving. At this place I feel real home atmosphere which is so rare and appreciated
