This place is a San Jose institution. I grew up with my family and I always going to the Forest Avenue location until it closed, so we had to drive a little further to this location. But we always had our family gatherings and celebrations at the Burger Pit. Of course the prices have gone up over the years but that is only due to the absolutely ridiculous cost of living in San Jose over the decades. Don't be afraid of the prices. This establishment continues its quality of ingredients and recipes so you get your money's worth. You will walk out of there with a full belly feeling like you had an amazing home-cooked barbecue meal. And the owners and staff are mostly generational, so there is great care taken with their customers. Many of these people were there when I was running around as a little kid. Now I am 40 years old and it's literally like walking into a time capsule. The same people, the same smiles and the same excellent service. Make sure you visit this place and grab a bite before they close down. The real estate in San Jose has become so egregious and outrageous that long time institutions like the Burger Pit cannot afford to stay around unless they charge you $40 for a cheeseburger. It's an absolute shame that places like the Burger pit, which helped play a huge part in making San Jose what it is, Is not better honored and taken care of by the city it helped create.Don't miss out. Go down and get yourself A steerburger or bacon steerburger, my personal favorite, and give some love to this wonderful group of business owners.
My friend and I were going to go across the street to eat, then saw this place, it had outdoor seating, so we gave it a try.We both got a burger and fries, and yes a beer..lolMy burger was perfect. The service was super, we got extra condiments and out server kept checking on us outside. I totally will come here again.
Loved this old school burger/steak joint. Reminds me of my youth when there were Burger Pits everywhere.Burgers are outstanding.COVID rules make the experience a bit sanitized but I don't hold that against Burger PitI did see a sign that their lease will not be renewed and they have until May 2024.
The place could use a fresh coat of paint, but the taste of food and quality of service more than make up for it. Would definitely be coming back to try other items in menu ☺️
The steak was perfectly grilled, very soft and delicious. No salad bar but small salad was given with perfectly grilled buttered bread and fries. The clam chowder was very creamy and tasty. Very friendly environment and staffs. Loved it!
Still love this place!!! Been going here since I was a little girl with my grandmother. Im now 51 and still enjoy the yummy steak and baked potato. My favorite memory as a child would be ordering the chili with Saltine crackers with grandma and then immediately heading to the wood shelf on the wall for the weekly coloring sheet and styrofoam cups of crayons. Good times and great memories!!!
Filling. That's all that needs to be said about lunch! Almost FOUR hours later and I'm STILL stuffed! My uncle's been helping me build bookcases for my living room, so I treated him to lunch for his help. His neighbor told him about this place, so we decided to try it today (4/8/22). The neighbor extolled their steak sandwiches, fries, and vanilla shakes! And since I've been craving an old-fashioned shake, that's where we went. The restaurant is a down-home kind of place evoking a sort of Southern (or maybe Midwest) appeal. You walk to the ordering window, place your order (medium-well, here, please!), and then take your ticket and find a seat. There are indoor tables and booths and ONE outdoor table (for four).First thing you see on the menu are the prices. $6.99 for a vanilla shake took me aback at first, but you have to remember that you're getting the tall shake glass AND the tall metal mixing glass, too. Our ribeye sandwiches came with either fries or baked potato. I had the fries. My uncle had the potato. The sandwiches are served on oblong sesame buns with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion slices. And the ribeye was SO tender and seasoned well. The fries are my favorite kind: crispy on the outside and mushy on the inside--steak fries (though they weren't wedges). For the potato, you get butter and sour cream. Packets of mayo, bottles of steak sauce and ketchup are given to you on a tray when you place the order. Our waitress was super sweet and friendly, even advising us to STIR the shake in the metal container before pouring it into the glass or we'd be swimming in our shakes instead of drinking them! She brought our meals, then walked through the restaurant checking up on all the other diners to see if they were doing well. On her way back, she checked in on us. She did this a few times during our meal. Even the man who took our order came to see how we liked it when we'd finished (my uncle had told him this was our first visit). Talk about down-home treatment and top-notch customer service. While we waited for our meals, my uncle and I perused the menu. He began to get super excited when he saw "Chili Size" on the menu. I had NO clue what that was, so he told me and then he said he was definitely returning with his son (my cousin) because they both loved chili size and hadn't had it in AGES! I'm actually eager to try out their fish sandwich, chicken tenders, and seafood platter (I prefer chicken and fish more than beef). And each entree comes with (let's see if I can remember) salad, fries, or baked potato AND garlic bread. (Now don't quote me on that because I don't remember exactly and didn't think to get a picture of their menu.)Anyhow, we had a great lunch and will certainly be back.
Best burger in San Jose. This is not up for debate haha. Was my parents favorite burger spot for years and I am in hopes they stay open for good as I heard rumors they may close. So please go support, love the staff
We love Burger Pit!!! Ever since I was a little girl in the 60's/70's its been one my favorite restaurants! The owners & staff are great! Take out orders are always ready, hot, fresh & delicious!!!
Burger pit offers an astounding array of classic American foods. Their extensive burger and steak options come with a product offering that caters towards those with low-incomes. All in all at burger pit it feels like you are getting more than you paid for which makes it one of my favorites.
