Delicious Japanese food! All seafood were very fresh and umami, and the grilled salmon was juicy and tender. 100% worth the price!
I came based on a friend's recommendation, and he's a real foodie who eats at high end sushi restaurants all the time. As for myself, I've been to Japan twice, and have eaten at good sushi restaurants all over the U.S. My short take on this place is that the food is of good quality. The execution of the dishes are pretty good. However, I cannot give a good review based on a couple details:- Cleanliness: I sat at the bar and observed that none of the sushi chefs wore hats. Cleanliness and tidiness is of the utmost importance in a high end Japanese restaurant (shouldn't it be for all restaurants?), and you would pretty much always see sushi chefs at the bar wearing hats. This tainted my dining experience a bit. I'm by no means OCD, but found the sight of it a bit disturbing, as I kept picturing the possibility of finding hair in my food.- Pacing of the Meal: I ordered the omakase, which is a multi-course meal. A good restaurant that serves a tasting menu, including sushi restaurants, can control the pacing of the meal so that there would not be long gaps between the courses. I must say that I was a bit disappointed that it took as much as 15 - 20 minutes between several of the courses. It makes the meal unnecessarily long and affects the dining experience.Other than that, I thought the food itself was actually pretty good. Good enough for 4 stars on their own. The portions are small but that's standard for traditional Japanese serving sizes, for example the sushi's are supposed to be bite size, to be consumed with one bite. That being said, although the basic omakase is $95, which is not expensive at all by high end standards, the quantity of food will not satisfy an average adult eater. I'm not a big eater, and did also add the supplement for an extra $35, and found that to be just the right amount of food for me, but I think most people would still a little hungry.
Amazing experience located in Japantown SF, Authentic fresh creative fine dining Japanese food. Sushi tasting was amazing shared with my wife. Highly recommended this place if you love sushi.
I can't believe this place has so few reviews. It's right in Japantown, which is a nice area of town. They take reservations. The sushi and appetizers were excellent, even for my husband who does not usually eat sushi. The drinks were also very good. It was a nice atmosphere for dinner.
Early Sushi VibesWhile Omakase and dinner-only Oma Station gets more views, the team behind Hinata has a quiet hit in the more accessible SasaLocated in the heart of Japantown, Sasa sits on the second floor of the Japan Center East MallA fantastic price point, diverse offerings and casual ambiance makes this spot a winner for bar seating and table dining alikeWe sampled the signature mystery box and chef’s nigiri and loved it all? Average at best. Cold interior that's a pastiche of Japanese culture, average food at a high price, attractive waitstaff who can't answer simple questions about the menu. The restaurant describes itself as Japanese American, but that's debatable. I'd describe this as yuppie American. Sushi An is similarly priced and a much better experience.
We stumbled upon this place on our last visit to Japan town. We weren’t sure what to expect and it ended up being a real treat. The actual dining area is absolutely beautiful and I love the calm that all the natural elements provide. The sushi itself was very high quality and there are so many things that we are excited to go back and try. Not your everyday sushi menu.
Don't under estimate the quality of their Omakase just because this is located in a mall. It's worth the price and add the 'extra' (Santa Barbara Uni and sea trout with caviar, tamago and there was one more the night we were there) They have a decent sake list as well with some brands that I had not seen previously.
Sushi is so good for the price range
We went there in a group of six. It’s okay they had to charge a mandatory 20% of service fees. But it was NOT okay to charge it automatically on top of post-sales-tax and SF employee support fees all together. Some waiter clarified that they would charge it pre-tax. The other came with a different answer and said they couldn’t change how the machine calculated. Be aware of this. Food was okay and portion was smaller than we expected. Also, they don’t have a restroom inside the restaurant and you need to use the ones in the Japantown mall. They close at 10pm and the servers didn’t warn us about this!! They do parking validation but it didn’t cover the whole time (maybe only an hour or two and their service was slow).
