Spicy fried chicken, collards and red beans & rice - arguably the best southern food I have had in the city.
There aren't a lot of restaurants that I find myself willing to go out of the way for, but Hard Knox is one of those places. During lockdown and the first half of 2021, there were times I absolutely missed coming here just because I missed their cornbread muffins. It's comes with any meal you order from them and when you have it at the restaurant, it's piping hot and the butter just melts into all the nooks. It is absolutely terrific. You can always order extra as well, if you so desire.When I finally felt safe enough to go out and enjoy a meal at a restaurant, this was one of the first places I decided to go. It hasn't been very packed the last couple of times, so I haven't had any issues with service. But the food is still wonderful as I remember. The last time was my first time having the blackened red snapper and it was so good. The fish wasn't dry and the seasoning was just right. I picked collard greens and red beans and rice as my sides and those were really good as well.
Decor was fun and welcoming, though the booth seats were really run down. Fast and attentive service. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich which was excellent, loved their BBQ sauce (tomato based which I prefer). The cornbread was good but the mac n cheese was just really bad and similar to Kraft and kind of stuck together not in a good way. Might stop here again after climbing (one of the few places open on a Monday in the neighborhood) but wouldn’t go out of my way.

Stopped on a whim and was surprised. It’s kinda hard to get great food in the bay. This is an Unfussy diner. The chicken was really good.
My boyfriend told me about this place for a few months and was very satisfied when we finally went. I even came home with leftovers so I was happy ? can't wait to go back when we go to SF again.
