While in San Francisco, we had breakfast two mornings in a row at this diner.The place is very nice, clean and well decorated. The food is very affordable, the portions are correct, and it is well cooked. We were very satisfied with what we ate and drank.However, the big negative that spoils the experience at Chestnut Diner is the service atmosphere. The two times we were there, the waitress was very unfriendly: no smile, no effort on the pronunciation even though we are French, rude sentences, the impression of annoying her when we ask for something... It doesn't make you want to tip her!In short, we recommend the Chestnut Diner for its food, but be prepared for the cold reception.
I have been going to this place for over 10 years. They made incorrect order and refused to give me correct order. Their English is horrible, they don’t understand English and often make wrong orders for customers. They have been rude and nasty to me. You would think they would treat a 10 year old customer with a lot more respect. Do NOT go to this diner. If this is how they treat a regular customer of 10 years, you can’t imagine how they would treat a new customer. The owner makes sandwiches with bare hands (no gloves), department of public health violation.
Completely inedible food. Got the omelette that is named after this place and the person I was with got another type of omelet. They used freeze dried shrimp/crab and AMERICAN cheese that wasn’t even melted on mine. American cheese was on both types of omelets. Was there waiting for service for an hour before we even got our drinks so understaffed. Felt sick after eating the small amount that I did.
Great little neighborhood diner with fantastic food. Very price friendly too for any budget. Staff was friendly. Food was very good and service was quick.

The best french toast! We were in San Francisco for 3 days and we had breakfast the 3 days in a row there. excellent service, delicious coffee.
We found it by chance and it was the best. We ate there almost all our vacation, great food, excellent portions and very good service. And walking distance from our hotel.
