We walked in by chance and luckily they had a cancellation and were able to give us a table (recommend making reservations in advance). The service was amazing, explaining carefully all the different homemade infused vodkas, which ones would pair better with food. They have a chef's menu, but we decided to choose a la cart and make our own adventure. The quality of the food was top notch, as was the presentation and the explanations.Very interesting cuisine, Russian modern dishes, caviar, duck liver mouse, beef cheeks, beets leaves and rye bread.Perfect place for a celebration or an anniversary.
Beautifully curated tasting menu with an interesting pairing of Georgian wines. The waitstaff is attentive and knowledgeable and delivered a great experience. Wonderful deep flavors with an artful elevated presentation, yet the dishes retained a homey charm. Looking forward to my next visit.
Wonderful Russian comfort food.Loved the beet greens, nice smoky flavor. The potatoes and mushrooms and sour cream was also nice, but could have used more spices like paparika (but maybe spices aren't Russian so much).Got the Black Cod main dish, a little expensive at $41, but the cod was perfectly cooked and the skin with the salmon roe was nice. However the consume liquid was bland and probably should be served on the side or the millet cake should be made crispier so it can absorb the liquid more readily. The desert of aspic with gooseberries was predictable, but at least it's not overly sweet like the 1950s American jello versions.Slava Ukraini!
Fantastic dinner! Lots of very well prepared food and great drinks. The staff are super helpful and friendly as well.
We really enjoyed everything about our meal here. Traditional Russian ingredients and dishes prepared in a way that makes them special. We will be back
We were there for their inaugural brunch service, and everything is fantastic, from the service to food. The most refreshing part is how bright and gentle the overall seasoning on the dishes are. Huge departure from the heavy reliance on high acidity, sweetness and salt to create flavor contrasts, which most progressive restaurants are doing nowadays. The only downside of our experience is that the indoor space is a bit crammed.
Birch and Rye offers an incredible and unique brunch menu, unlike anything else I’ve seen offered in San Francisco. With a contemporary take on Russian staples like Buckwheat and Millet, as well as high-end ingredients like Caviar and Salmon, I’d describe the theme of the menu as “elevated and understated”. Nothing is too salty, too sweet, too savory; each dish seamlessly blends into the next. The absolute highlights are the Poached Pear and Millet Porridge, and of course, the Buckwheat Nest. Trust me, you’ve never had buckwheat like this before, it’s outstanding.
Friendly staff, nice ambience, good food.Princess Anastasia is a delicious cocktail; very balanced and not too sweet.Caviar service is great but little pricey as expected.Khachapuri is super tasty if you like having a filling appetizer.Large plate options are limited. I recommend ordering multiple small plates instead. Stroganoff is the vegetarian option where the meat is substituted with mushrooms.Unfortunately, the dessert selection is limited.Overall, very nice and elegant place.
Utterly fantastic! Make a reservation as soon as you can. This place is new, and it's about to be the Hottest Spot in San Francisco. The choices unlike anything you have seen or had before. Seriously! Almost unbelievably delicious!
