I’ve been there at least a dozen times, and the food was never better than average, and was downright sickening until I sorted out the cause. Avoid the spinach in your omelette, as it consistently made me and my friends sick. It took me a long time to figure out what was causing our diarrhea and I finally narrowed it down to the spinach after another friend tried the spinach after I warned him, and he ended up with diarrhea too! :) After our last visit with bad bacon, my friends finally insisted on trying a different breakfast restaurant, and we found a gem — Antoine’s Cafe. On google, Antoine’s Cafe currently has just a 0.1 higher rating, but their food is more than three times as good and won’t make you sick. So, with much better options, I recommend skipping Sunrise Cafe.
Favorite stop for breakfast when heading to San Diego. Have not been here in a few years but the food is still outstanding with great coffee. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
The food and the service were good. The prices are kinda high though. My girlfriend and I split a wet burrito and it was filling for both of us. The Chile Verde is really good.
The breakfast burritos are big - good to share between two people. My son's pancakes were not the best.
Turns out prejudice is still alive and well in Southern California. As a mixed race man, I’ve never seen such a feeling of unwelcomeness. From having her refuse to come to my table, talk behind my back to other clients in front of the guests, and her Spanish speaking crew insulting me for simply trying to find the restroom. As soon as I got up from my table, hungry, and overhearing jabs such as that I look “sleepy” and having an employee yell the cuss word “mierda” looking at me then laughing with a coworker. For this older Grey haired lady to rush over all of a sudden after what felt like hours and snort that I have to order at the table was the rudest interaction I’d only seen in Civil Rights documentaries previously. Mind you, I was the only guest inside the restaurant that hadn’t received food. She took over 5 minutes too busy talking about me to help. Her attitude never improved despite attempts at cheery small talk proving she did not want me or my business there. As a UCLA graduate, I thought time people had on their phones to do research could allow for compassion, however, in the thought processes of a place built upon FDR’s New Deal to provide welfare to uneducated, lower class whites, there would be more respect for what affluent African Americans deserved to own in property that was lost from redlining. Calypso’s Sunshine Cafe is clearly a bastion of disrespect of not only myself, but this history and lack of compassion for what people like her have not earned and still demand you to feel the misery of ten people that exist inside themselves - I feel embarrassed for the customers that also saw their display of inequity. Those who deny people of color, like myself, basic, untenable rights as a citizen are the least Christian-like images I could imagine. I will likely be seeing them in court. P.S. I did not say anything as I usually am just grateful to be served food, however, their house salad was low quality too, especially for the asking price of $8.95, my guess is that these inflated low quality products are likely holding up their rent by strings which is still no excuse for behavior that was not seen given to any of the other guests. When she nearly slammed down the bill in front of me then proceeded to lightly ask the couple next to me if they wanted theirs, I knew this older lady, I believe her to be the owner, deserved civil rights attorneys on her - this definitely was just business as usual as several other employees were present exacerbating her bullish lack of class. I will say the much younger waitress was filled with charm, kindness and engagement - shame she wasn’t there for me from start to finish - but all I needed was to be treated as a person, not as a punching bag. To treat people in such an unchristian, inequitable capacity as a customer, San Diegan, American, and also as a person of integrity, I will be coming back with my white Mother and our lawyers to let them know what I will not accept in this country.
I enjoyed a delicious (and humongous) breakfast burrito. Great, quick service for a popular breakfast spot in San Clemente.
I went to this restaurant twice. The first time the waitress said if I wanted to order lunch it would be an extra 30 minutes to prepare. We ordered breakfast to cut down on the prep time. We waited 45 minutes for our breakfast. Nothing to write home about. I should have ordered lunch. We went back there with the hope that our first experience was a fluke. Not only did we have to wait 40 minutes for our breakfast, when we inquired about our order with the waitress, she was openly rude to us. After our encounter, we observed her being apologetic to others. Go figure. It's not my nature to stiff a waitress. We payed and tipped and vowed not to return.
While making an annual getaway to San Clemente two years ago, we got a tip from hotel staff to try Sunrise Cafe for breakfast. It was such a perfect recommendation that we hastened back the following year to order the same delicious breakfast tacos and found the same waitress, Holly, who is such a delight! And here we are for our third year and so glad to get the opportunity to enjoy a scrumptious breakfast tacos and hash browns before heading back home. Try the French toast too! Holly is a professional and a delight! Leslie took good care of us too. And Thomas was so helpful!
Terrible service! We wait 45 min for our food. The waitress apologized 4 times and even told us that they were so behind with the orders. We also noticed that they were prioritizing the to go orders instead the ones at the Cafe.About the food? It was ok! Just like you can expected it in any diner
This place has delicious food. Huge portions. Ordered the breakfast tacos and they were soo good! ? Highly recommend.
