The most kind people to serve the most delicious food and desserts in fantastic china! The setting is gorgeous and they give you a guided tour through the house for free. They are all volunteers with great enthousiasm and passion for Steinbeck and his life.

I drove halfway across the country, only to land in Salinas on the one day when this place in John Steinbeck's birthplace hosts a "high tea" party and expects you to pay $40 a head to partake. No thanks.
We did not have time to eat lunch here, but I am very thankful that we were able to get a quick tour of part of the house. It's an old house -- so the main attraction is not the house so much as getting to see where Steinbeck was raised. A wonderful docent gave us an impromptu tour -- and this is why I think docents are great, because they care a lot and tell great stories. It's a labor of love. Keep in mind this is probably not a money making venture even though they offer dining - it is run by a non-profit, and appeared partially staffed by docents. There's also a fun gift shop in the basement where we had fun and spent some money to support them. Two great docents were down there, where there is also a miniature model of the house.

Omg... what a find! Fantastic food, and all run by volunteers who are eager to share history and stories of the family and family home--except the chef...who prepared and amazing meal. Did you know that the Steinbeck House is mostly run by volunteers? It is, and they do a fantastic job with service and treating you special for your lunch or dinner out. Every corner of this house is historic, beautiful,and preserved well. I recommend eating here for that very special meal you will not regret it.
Got the Steinbeck tea, chicken apple sandwich, and chocolate Charlotte. Everything was delicious and the ladies running it are the sweetest! The gift is nice too

Only visited the gift shop and looked at the exterior but it was worth it. Beautiful historic house. There are a few 120+ year old houses in the area. But keep your eyes open for the one a block away painted a baby-blue with white trim, a very beautiful house. A 5 minute walk from the Steinbeck museum.
