I have Never Ever posted a negative review but I was appalled at the lack of service at Baleen kitchen. We went there for dinner in the lounge. It was still light and overlooking the marina. Ordered drinks which were great! But, afterwards it went downhill. Our appetizers came an hour later and we were waiting almost 2 hours for our dinner which never came. Al the very least the “comped” our drinks and appetizers. Unimpressed, and dismayed. Portofino needs to step it up. Should have ordered room service.
I like the location of this place, we have a boat in the Marina and we loved having drinks and apps outside. Last night we had dinner reservations. I ordered the chef special which was a seafood pasta. Everything was going well until I found a maggot in my food! I was so disgusted.. the manager offered to put in another food order and said it was a caterpillar. I did not order any more food besides dessert and that was whatever.. not impressed by this place.
Why was there only one bartender and one server working 15 tables tonight?! People weren’t getting their drinks (45 min for me!) or their food (eventually we decided we would just go home and do takeout). What in the world happened! Management you need to do something. People were leaving screaming. I hate posting bad reviews because I work in the restaurant business but I have never seen anything like this. Either hire more staff or seat less people. So embarrassed bringing out of town friends here! Ahh!
I had wanted to meet up with friends who live in Long Beach and so decided to meet up at this restaurant as it is half way between LA and Long Beach. The restaurant itself is well laid out and we got a quiet corner table. The wait staff was very good and polite. We ordered appetizers and we were told after a while that they were out of okra so we said that we are fine with shishito peppers by themselves. 5 mins. Later we were told that they were out of peppers too. So back to the drawing board. One of us ordered lamb with pasta but there were microscopic bits of lamb in the dish. They could very easily mint money in this place but the kitchen staff were not the best to say the least. The wait staff should have been advised what items were available and what were not. The wait staff apologized and gave us some free ice cream. A shame that a restaurant in such a great location has bad chefs !
This place seems like a hidden secret for brunch. No crowd, great views of the harbor, and really good breakfast at a very reasonable price.
I grew up in PV... My family and I have been coming to Portofino Inn since I was a teenager. We drive out now from Rancho Cucamonga to walk the beach and enjoy special moments at Baleen Kitchen. I'm a chef I can tell the appreciate the effort it takes to create (great food) & serve (great service) with a mask on... All while maintaining great energy and spirit. Well done.***Look at the pic of the FIRE EGGS BENEDICT I took before polishing off. The egg yolk was actually orange.
Nice location with views of Shoreline Village area, Lighthouse and Queen Mary. Service was good and staff were friendly. Food ordered was delivered in a timely manner. The large salads are very large and could be shared by two people or you could have left over to take home.
We went to the baleen to celebrate my birthday. The food is delicious we had a great time but most of all Alex was amazing great costumer service! Thank you! Definitely we’ll comeback!

A few years ago I visited and didn't have that great of a time. Fast forward to last weekend my friends convinced me to come try it again and I had a great time! My drinks and service given by Alex was amazing! I highly recommend having a cocktail if you visit! Thanks again Alex.
