Small coffee shop with a seating outside... It's always a nice experience to sip a good cup of lattee from a local Cafe!

Whoever was the barista that took my order and made my drinks was rude and dismissive. I’ve never dealt with them before, never seen them before, but the way he was acting towards other customers, and then he sees me. It’s like I wasn’t even wanted as a customer there. I get it, as a fellow barista at another specialty shop. There are customers that you enjoy talking to, but that doesn’t mean you should chat them up for 5 minutes straight while someone else is in line waiting to order, then proceed to be straight rude and dismissive.Out of respect as a fellow barista, I still paid tip, I still thanked them for the coffee, and I still told them to enjoy the rest of their day. But no response back, just gave me my drinks with attitude, and walked away. The drinks weren’t even at temp, were Lukewarm and super dry. I like the way States espresso shots taste like, but after that whole event. I was about to throw my coffee away into the trash because that barista killed my vibe, and expectations of the cafe. I’d rather stick with the states out on San Pablo ave since I’ve always had good interactions with them. But this location is officially off my list of cafes to frequent.

Just got a fougasse, capp, and cheddar scallion scone. Staff was super friendly and attentive, capp was freaking way too hot!, fougasse was a dream. The scone blegh, wish they would stop getting Starter pastries, but I figure they keep the pastries because this store used to be Subrosa and people that frequented it expect those pastries. They have this amazing bread that is made locally, why not toast it and serve it? I think they would create converts. First time in and would go again.

Coffee was amazing, great prices, & easy parking. The gentleman working has positive and contagious energy..he went above and beyond for my experience. This is now the GO-TO coffee if your in downtown Oakland.

Local coffee shop. Love spending money at a local business. It's a frequent stop on one of my cycling workouts. A vegan donut just when I need one!

Really good coffee but the star of the show is the chocolate chip cookie. Live in SF, have had B. Patisserie, neighbor bakehouse, arsicault…States’ chocolate chip cookie is the best in the Bay!

As my other States reviews might indicate, I'm a fan of their coffee. I've been to the Martinez Roastery, the new San Pablo Roastery, and I've frequented both Oakland cafe locations on 40th and MLK. The 40th location has better seating options -- on the curb and in a little enclosed corner tucked behind the cafe. It seats about 6 tables with plenty of space and open air. The carry out window makes it easy to get your favorite coffee and pastry.

Welcoming vibes. Great coffee. Bread and pastries are really well crafted.

The almond fancier is good and the coffee is good!

The baristas were very friendly and fun. They had such a welcoming presence and the coffee was great. The new owners of the space really brought in new life! The new design is stylish and sleek.
