Food is good. Wish there were more places like this in Oakland.
This place was suggested as a BBQ spot. The female that took my order must have been new. Horrible customer service skills. She tried to short change me. I ordered the Mango habenero wings with a side. The fries were old so I just got the wings. They were decent but instead of 12 I got 11. Since I paid already then asked for just the wings shefirst tried to tell me that they were the same price. Then after I showed her the difference she gave me $2 change. I then had to show her that her math was off and get the rest of my coins. Chicken was okay but customer service was lacking and they shorted me a wing. No worries. Not going to support them anymore.
Asked for the Hot Link Dinner (hot)I was given the mild it was Okay.
I called ahead and they said they had what I wanted. They didn't. Also the links aren't as good as they used to be.
Best Bbq in Oakland ? I drive from Pittsburg to get my fix?
The tri tip relies heavily on the sauce the meat itself lacked flavor. The potato salad's taste didn't compliment the meal.
Incredible tri-tip sandwiches, moist and tasty chicken. Sides were a little bland, but I'd rather have less salt than too much. Friendly staff and great prices!
Ok the play on the title of my review is based on the 1992 song by Sir Mix-A-Lot "Baby Got Back". I have to admit turkey tails is one of my favorite food. However I call turkey tails "killer food" as eating too much of them can clog your arteries because they are fatty. I've had turkey tails broiled, grilled, and fried. However I never had them smoked. When I saw that this BBQ joint serves turkey tails I had to order them. For turkey tails I decided to get a medium BBQ sauce in order for the spices to cut the richness of the fat. I also ordered one pound each of the beef tri-tip and pork ribs. The day after Good Friday I drove to Oakland to pick up the items. I was surprised by the turkey tails as I assumed they would be serve whole. However the turkey tails were split in half. By splitting the tail tails in half and then smoking them the fat is rendered. Dipping these half-split turkey tails in the medium BBQ sauce did cut the richness. However these turkey tails at Champion Smokehouse weren't too fatty and that's a good thing because they more fattier the food the harder it is to eat more. When it comes to beef in Texas BBQ brisket rules whereas for beef in California BBQ tri-tip rules. Personally I like tri-tip more than brisket as tri-tip doesn't take a long time to cook than brisket. The tri-tip at Champion Smokehouse had that charred on that outside. In addition the tri-tip was more moist then most briskets I have ever ate. Even though the beef tri-tip comes with BBQ sauce you don't need to dunk the tri-tip on the sauce as the tri-tip is already moist. Now the pork ribs on the other hand you have to dip them in BBQ sauce. They were the worst item I ordered. The meat was dry and stringy. That is why this I could not rate this place a 5-star rating as for most BBQ places the most important item is the pork ribs. Two out of the three ain't bad. I did come mainly for turkey tails. If I am hungry for a piece of a** then I will order turkey tails at Champion Smokehouse.
