Prior to the pandemic, there was a street that ran about 8 feet from the side of the shop that merged with Miles Avenue. Thanks to the city of Oakland (and I’m guessing Federal stimulus money to cities) the street was removed and there is now an plaza that the shop uses for outdoor seating. The vibe changed from primarily being a commuter coffee shop (grab and go and catch BART) to a neighborhood hangout. They make excellent cappuccinos (my expresso drink of choice) and my only complaint is that they don’t serve non-fat milk. This is their only location and locally owned. It has been a great addition to the Rockridge neighborhood.
Ain't Normal was a place my partner and I would grab a drink after completing our errands up College Ave. I asked them to grab a seat while I went in to order a mocha for them. While they were preparing the drink, I noticed the staff muttering among themselves about someone that had sat down outside in their seating section. In remembrance of Father's day we splurged and got a sandwich from Boichik Bagel's. I never thought my partner having an unopened Boichik bagel sandwich out on a table would be something to cause an issue with the staff. We didn't see signs stating that outside food/drink was not allowed. The staff didn't wait even one minute to make the judgment to confront my partner asking whether or not they are waiting for someone inside. After my partner said that they were waiting for me inside, the staff stated the tables were for customers only and no outside food was allowed. In short, asking them to leave. The only positive thing I can say about Ain't Normal is that they allow you to bring your own cup. This experience left a bad taste in our mouths and we don't feel comfortable revisiting this establishment again.If you are reading this review looking for an alternative option for a place you don't have to worry about being judged by the staff, The Chocolate Dragon down the street pulls an excellent shot of espresso with silky smooth steamed milk and has the nicest people working there you will ever meet.
Definitely come check out this hip coffee spot on the corner!Cappuccino is top notch. Deep flavor with perfect foam.Mocha was the perfect combo of coffee and chocolate. Not too sweet with phenom chocolate creaminess.Scone.... you MUST try this. It was the best scone I've had in a long time.
I tried the iced matcha latte which was probably one of the best ones I've had. They have super fast and friendly staff. The cafe is small on the inside and they only had outdoor seating when i went. There weren't enough tables with umbrellas so might not be the ideal place if you need to do work here for a long time.
the baristas are skilled, the coffee is delicious but the scones. the scones are truly special.
Great scones as others have mentioned! Also got the chai latte which was very flavorful. Service was welcoming and quite fast.
My new favorite coffee shop! I can’t even begin to explain how amazing this place is. There are a variety of different beans from brands all over the Bay area. The single origin shots were pulled to perfection! If you ever go, try the white wine fermented single origin. It is to die for.
Love this spot. Unpretentious, Sunny outdoors and, of course, a great cappuccino. Concur with others about the chill barista vibe.
