Felt overpriced for what we got. Also, the tap water tasted like rusty pipes and there were little options for bottled water.
I am a local and have lived in Newport Beach my entire life, this is the first time I’ve been to the most relaxed mellow , comforting place in such along time. The owner is so sweet and kind and made my family and I feel at home. I had the scallops and they were the best I had, the dining area is beautiful on balboa island and with open deck windows and a constant ocean breeze. Just love people watching while enjoying the balboa walk way and sitting at a beautiful table. Also I tried the Squash blossoms and it was just perfect and healthy. Food is A plus and I will be coming back.
Me and my team tried this place yesterday for lunch. They surprising have a big lunch crowd during the week lol. I ordered the Fish and Chips, And some of the guys ordered the pub burgers. Great experience overall!
We visit all the restaurants on Balboa Island and Royal Hen is by far the best! Always festive and terrific food. Try the warm sourdough bread and the salmon!
The Hen is my go to place on Balboa Island. Especially for chicken pot pie. Cynthia and her staff are the best. BTW since we’re in the post COVID-19 era I recommend reservations especially for Saturday!
I am not sure why is it called “royal hen” they do not have any chicken on their menu except pot pie. ?We felt very rushed through our dinner. Host didn’t put in out steak order and we sat there for about 30 mins. Then told them to cancel the steak. We are going to leave. We were told they forgot to put it in. The person who was rushing us and took order never apologized but gave us $10 discount.We felt the food was very salty and barely had a taste. Most of the food was cold except pot pie. And no we don’t have COVID.
Bland food that was not hot. Wine was good. Service was shotty. One gentleman that was serving us was polite and tried to be accommodating. The damage had already been done though, as we’d been served by a woman (who was rushing us) who neglected to put in part of our order and ultimately we canceled it and left.
