We celebrated our 17th Wedding Anniversary at the Whaling Station. We’ve been there many times before when we are in Monterey and always look forward to a fine meal. Freddie is the most gracious host you could ask for and Paul (which has worked there since 1979) is the epitome of professional waiter. He gave us recommendations on how to prepare our steaks and suggested the perfect side dishes. Till next time!

For the price I’d like better food. This is like your grandfathers idea of a steak house. Mediocre flavored steak, average prime rib, nothing to write home about food wise. The service IS exceptional, they’re kind, friendly and provide a great experience and we’re excellent with our teen and younger child. The food is just not worth the price at all.

Ate there twice while visiting Monterey. Good and service perfect each time. We would love to return.

The food was great. The drinks were a bit pricey. But other than that the food was fabulous

My wife and I have been going to the Whaling Station now for 11 years. We often visit Monterey and every trip we make sure to go there. Between my wife and I we've tried every cut of their steaks and they are all wondeful. One of the best stories I have about the place was when, recently, we took some good friends there. They have just moved into the area a couple years ago. When we went there the wife of the couple ask us "Has this always been this good?" We, of course, answered YES! She was amazed at the consistancy of the quality. We've just taken it as one of the surities in life ... the Whaling Station is wonderful!!

Wonderful birthday celebration. Food was excellent as well as attention to detail. Great atmosphere. The desserts were ti die for and had to make room after we thought we couldn’t eat anything else.

Our waiter was very attentive and the food was amazing!

The waiter was helpful with the wine choice, they cleared our plates when we were done after each course which was nice, and the food was delicious!

Charred steak but they cooked us another but it was still too charred.

It was my birthday so we booked this as special treat. We both ordered steaks. My son ordered the rib eye and me the sirloin. The sirloin just happened to be the cheapest steak on the menu at $40. I am also gluten free but, with steak, that shouldn’t be a problem. However, none of the sauces they offered up with the steak were gluten free and so mine arrived with ketchup. To say my steak was dry was an under statement (I ordered it medium rare). I asked if there was any sauce that could accompany it and was eventually brought some bernaise sauce. That helped to make the steak edible. My son’s steak was delicious and he actually ended up eating most of my steak as well but was counting how many chews he had to make before swallowing as he couldn’t believe how bad it was compared to his. Shame really. It was an ok restaurant but not special. I ordered the cheapest steak as it was small - and I don’t have a huge appetite - I didn’t order it because I expected it to be sub standard. We had one course (steak) and shared a dessert plus one cocktail and one glass of Prosecco and the meal came to $186. Not cheap and not value for money in my opinion.
