Mexican food, as we experience it in the U.S., is sadly, a monolith. We want fast tacos and burritos, glossing over amazing regional flavors. Locals will say you have to go to Salinas for good Mexican food, and they’re mostly right. La Casa del Sazón reaches out to the coast and brings a taste of Michoacán to downtown Monterey. And let’s face it, you’re not likely to risk a trip to this dangerous region of Mexico for some carnitas. Fortunately, the Maravilla family will welcome you with warm, homemade tortillas, and fresh, not fast food. The Molcajete Michoacano is unlike anything you’ve had, a mind bending mashup of meat, cheese and cactus. If that isn’t enough excitement, tuck into a quesobirria, which will wipe all thoughts of a French Dip from your memory. No matter what you choose, relax into your comfy booth, soak in the friendly staff, enjoy a cocktail and get ready for a meal you’ll obsess about on your insta.
Had dinner here while visiting Monterey. Staff was super accommodating took care of us and our young son, one year old. Our boy made a huge mess as toddlers do, luckily we were able to sit outside which allowed him to scream his head off. Food was very good, really reminded us of the better Mexican restaurants from our home City. If you're looking for Mexican in Monterey, I would definitely give la casa del Sozon a shot
Very, very good experience! Service was attentive, quick and friendly. Food was excellent (we had the special wet chile relleno burrito and the bacon-wrapped prawns). Portions were HUGE (wish we had been warned!) We took 3/4ths of our meal home. Website is misleading; no full bar at Monterey location. Easy-going setting and nice ambience. We won't hesitate to come back.
It was my First time to this location, since i go a lot to the one in salinas i couldn’t help comparing the food and service from the location in salinas. There was very little staff, no one greeted us until about 4 minutes standing there. Our waitress was very friendly, patience and professional, she kept checking on us. The food wasn’t that great, poorly taste. Specially the camarones a la diabla, not spicy at all and they deep them in liters and liters of butter. The location is great and the restaurant is nice from inside.

Excellent Mexican food, the staff was very friendly and helpful. We had Sopes and Quesobirria tacos. Both were delicious! The whole beans on the side were also worth noting. I enjoy beans but usually don't get too excited about them but theirs were easily some of the best I've had. Rich buttery texture unlike any I've tried in the past. If I lived nearby this would be my goto mexican restaurant for sure! Next time I'm in Monterey I know where I'll be eating! Bonus- good Mexican beer on draft too
Excellent service. I came in for a quick lunch and the bartender got my order in before the party of 12. Sea bass tacos with handmade tortillas are flavorful and moist. A gem to discover!!!
Unfortunately, their staff has not been educated on proper welcoming etiquette...My friend and I were inclined to come here, the review said it had a patio, it consisted of 3 tiny square tables right outside the front door. However, I did not let this discourage me, I was excited to try the food....Upon entry, there were 2 ladies, one behind a counter in the far back, and another that passed by me to assist the only other table of customers there inside...no greet, nada.We were in there almost 5 minutes without ANYONE greeting us. We walked out. If they were packed, I'd get it...where I come from, we greet every walk of life with a smile, and a "we'll be right with you!" Not here apparently. I don't care to return with that type of "hospitality"
Food was delicious had a good flavor, look and taste freshly made, they also give homemade corn tortillas. They offer excellent customer service. Will definitely come back.
