First time at Alta evening dinner. The environment was so social and full of energy. Very welcoming and the staff members were very kind and always checking in on us at our table of 2. The music was classic, food was great and I would love to come back again!
The ambiance and decor is so beautiful, I wanted to like this place so bad but I can’t lie. The drinks were weak, taste like juice so didn’t feel justified for the price. The chicken wasn’t cooked properly so it was still pink in some parks. The greens were to acidic, but the cornbread was so good. The Mac and cheese was ok, I’m going to go back to give them another chance because I’m hoping maybe they were having a bad day. I’ve heard great reviews so I’m glad to go back and try something else on the menu
Great stop for a drink. Beautiful decor, awesome staff. Outdoor patio is super cute too. Bottle shop attached. Support this Black-owned business!!!
I really wanted to love this place, but the food was below my expectations. They were out of oxtails and sweet potatoes which I really wanted to try so instead, I had the blackend salmon which was served over smashed tatter tots, (yes tatter tots!), which was subpar. My husband had the chicken. They didn't give him a choice of the chicken. He was served a thigh, leg and wing. Who would serve someone a leg and wing as part of the main portion of the entree? For the price of this dish, he should of had his choice of chicken. Albertsons has better chicken for a much better price and you can choose what part you like. The mac and cheese was subpar and in my opinion so were the greens; the only thing they did was drown them in vinegar. The food did not justfy the price that they charge. I did order the shrimp and grits to go and it was delicious. Now I definitely won't dine in there again because it was a huge disappointment, but I may order the shrimp and grits for take out.
This restaurant is a must try. We made a reservation for lunch. Upon arrival it took a few minutes for a host to seat us but once we were seated the service was quick and consistent. We ordered a cocktail and the black eye pea fritters. I can't remember the name of the cocktail but it was a bourbon drink similar to an old fashioned. The drink was perfect. The fritters while tasty, the texture of the center wasn't my favorite. For our entree, we ordered and shared a 6 pc fried chicken (wings, thighs, and drumsticks are what arrived), brisket combo with greens and mac and cheese, and fries. The crust and seasoning on the fried chicken was delicious. The greens were cooked perfectly and tasted great (and I am VERY picky about greens). I wasn't a huge fan of the mac and cheese but I wouldn't say it was a bad.To finish our meal, we ordered the 7up cake. If it's on the menu when you go YOU MUST order it. It's not overly sweet and perfectly moist. We have already made plans for brunch at Alta that should tell you how good it is. So good that we need a repeat visit just a few days after the first visit.
The atmosphere is eclectic and the food is bomb.com The fried chicken was seasoned nicely and quite crispy. The Mac and cheese was very good (quite cheesey). The candied yams was a bit undercooked and too sweet but the star of the show were the DEVILED EGGS!!!! The filling was a zesty flavorful kind of spicy delight! My friends said the brisket, red beans and rice were delicious. I'm going back for the black eyed peas fritter. I would highly recommend going during early during the weekday to avoid needing reservations. They stay booked. There is only street parking which is why I highly recommend going early on a weekday or early weekend if you can't do weekdays. The service is great!
What an experience I had at this gem tucked away on Adams blvd in South Los Angeles. Alta masterfully showcased the way to make familiar foods feel new through tastes & presentation. The Smoked Tofu was excellent but the starters of cornbread & black pea fritters were something I could have ordered again just to savior the tastes. Loved the pairing of such excellent cocktails (shoutout the bartender) & paired with a phenomenal wine store connected next door. A must try if your from LA or visiting!
The food was delicious and service was great. We showed up for a reservation that we accidentally didn’t finish booking (you have to put in a credit card to complete reservation on Resy because they have a $45 cancellation fee) and they still sat us right away. It was an early reservation and there were plenty of tables available. I had the blackened salmon special. It was good but a bit too spicy. I love spicy food and thought it was too spicy. We also had deviled eggs which were great (also very spicy). But they were “out of” seasonal vegetables. And “out of” fried tofu, which when the waiter explained it to us it seemed like the kitchen just didn’t want to make it at that time. He said it would take 40 minutes and I was like “uuummm okay?” but the kitchen told him to tell us they were out I guess. The brand of sparkling water they had was delicious, but the 12oz bottle costs $9 lmao. I really want to give them 5 stars but the reservation policy is wild, they’re generally overpriced and the fried tofu thing. Having said that, I’d go back for the ambience and the Mac n cheese.
My family and I had lunch here recently during a visit to Los Angeles. The restaurant has a long bar and a number of booth seating indoors, and a spacious outdoor patio in the rear. The shrimp and grits that my wife and I had were excellent, and the waitstaff suitably attentive.
Looking for soul food? Avoid this place at all costs. We were wooed by the good press this place had received so while we were in town visiting from Dallas, TX our group of five gave it a try. We were completely disappointed. First, the bar problem. As we waited at the bar for our early evening table, they had already run out of the beers on tap and only had one offering. The mixed drink selection is meager and drinks such as martinis and cosmos that should be served in appropriate glasses are served in tiny doll sized glasses priced at $16. Tequila shots are overpriced as is the beer. On to dinner. As we were seated, the hostess immediately told us we had a 90 minute timeline to finish our meal and get out; not exactly a warm, inviting slice of hospitality. Next, our waiter, who really was cordial, informed us we had to order appetizers and entrees at the same time since the kitchen was short staffed and this kept them from having to put in multiple tickets. We did as instructed and ordered the cornbread he recommended for an appetizer and our entrees. Out came the cornbread which became a crumbly mess as it was cut and was nothing more than doctored up Jiffy out of the box. A few minutes later, all of our entrees were delivered and all of them were lukewarm which told me the food was probably being kept under heat lamps or given a quick microwaving before serving. Now for the specifics. Candied yams, NOT! They were two thick slices of tasteless sweet potatoes in a soupy looking brown, watery sauce sprinkled with chewy pecan clumps. Fried chicken, was lukewarm with a hot flavoring on it intended to be the spice; another fail. Collard greens were doused in vinegar and inedible. Red beans and rice had undercooked beans that were still hard. Oxtails came with cold rice. Two paltry black eyed pea fritters were cold and tasteless. The mac and cheese was the only tolerable side dish. Dessert didn't fare any better. We ordered a piece of Seven Up cake to share just in case it was as bad as the dinner. And, they failed that test too. The cake was underbaked and gooey throughout. I don't care what star has eaten here, the reputation is overblown as are the prices and any good reviews they've gotten. To top it off, they added a 3% "covid protocol surcharge" to our bill. What the heck was that about??? I didn't see any effort to take additional steps to clean and sanitize tables and service equipment or safely serve our meals. Only one staffer was wearing a mask, no one sanitized tables and chairs between seatings, inside ventilation wasn't particularly good, no sanitizing wipes or bottles available, etc., so it was difficult to understand why patrons had to pay for something that was non-existent at this restaurant. The cost of doing business during a pandemic is what a restaurant has to subsume, unfortunately, but we didn't see evidence that they were making efforts to "keep their servers and patrons safe" as the receipt stated as an explanation for the additional charge. Anyone who really knows what soul food is should steer clear of this place. Over priced, over rated, over hyped. Never again!
